Meat Inspection
Bill Gets Support
Of Local Packers

gon Meat Packers association
are working for the passage of
a bill in the legislature author
izing state meat production, it
was reported by association of
ficers today.
The measure is House Bill 99,
introduced Jan. 24 by the com
mittee on livestock at the re
quest of the Oregon Livestock
and Meat Marketing committee.
It provides for inspection of all
meat sold in the state by inspec
tors employed by the state de
partment of agriculture, and for
bids the sale for human con
sumption of unwholesome meat.
Cost 25 Cents
The cost of administering the
measure has been estimated at
about $400,000 per year, and as
sociation officials pointed out
that this amounts to only about
25 cents per person in the state.
The association, at a meeting
in Grants Pass last week, dis
cussed the bill and decided that
any member who could, should
go to Salem to meet with legis
lators to support the bill. Three
of them, O. L. Brown, Medford
Meat company, and Joe Blunk
and L. E. Lusk, - Grants Pass,
made the trip and-attended a
committee meeting which was
well attended by meat packers
from other portions of the state,
as well as others interested.
They report that there appears
to be little or no opposition to
the bill, and about the only
danger appears to stem from the
cost. Because of the increased
money needed to administer the
proposed law, it will . have to
have the approval of the ways
and means committee. -:-
"The people' and meat con
sumers of southern Oregon
should be informed that they
should get behind their local
packers and give them a boost
in supporting the measure." as
sociation officials said. "Two or
three hundred letters from clubs
and other groups over the state
at this time, -to senators and
representatives, would do a lot
of good," they added.
Brown has made several trips
to Salem on behalf of the meas
ure, and can provide the names
of the best legislators to write.
Ambrose, New York harbor's
main channel, is dredged to a
depth of 45 feet and a width of
2,000 feet. Off "Luxury Liner
Row" at midtown Manhattan,
where the largest ships dock, a
48-foot depth is maintained.

would permit dog racing at

On Gas Franchise

Milwaukee Freight
Derailed; No Injuries
Spokane (U.R) Five cars of
a Milwaukee Road freight train
were derailed last night near
Dishman when the 52-car train
hit an open switch.'
No one was hurt when the
cars left the tracks, went over
a bank and hit two standing
cars. The freight, loaded with
lumber from Metaline Falls, was
moving at about five miles an
hour when the mishap occurred.

Conversion of Sea
Water Declared
To Be Progressing
Washington (U.R) The gov
ernment is making promising
progress toward conversion of
sea and brackish water into
fresh water at a practical cost.
That day of cheap costs, how
ever, may be from five to 10
years away, a government ex
pert said today.
However, expert David S.
Jenkins said American research
ers can learn a lot from foreign
scientists.
Wants Extension
Jenkins is director of the gov
ernment's saline water conver
sion program. He wants Con
gress to extend the life of the
program and to increase the
money for such work from
$2,000,000 to $6,000,000.
"Foreign scientists in such
countries as Holland, Belgium,
France, Italy, Australia, and
South Africa are doing great
work on the problem," he told
the United Press.
"We can learn a lot from
them a sort of foreign aid in
reverse. I've visited some of the
countries and what I've learned
is that we've got a lot to learn."
Reported to Congress
Jenkins reported to the House
on what progress is being made
in this country in changing sea
to fresh water.
He said that some 10 labora
tory processes are under study,
and some 10 more are "gleams
in our eyes." But the most
promising found so far, he said,
is the-Hickman still for large
scale vapor compression.
