. Mickey Mantle, the tight-lipped
Yankee center fielder who
ordinarily doesn't have much to
say, loosened up -sufficiently to
day to express satisfaction with
salary terms and predicts that
he will enjoy his "best season
yet" in 1955.
The blond, 23-year-old Mantle,
who signed through the com
bined .efforts of Yankee Scout
Tom Greenwade and Assistant
General Manager Bill DeWitt,
reportedly received a $3,000 in
crease which boosts his .salary
into the $20,000-$25,000 bracket.-

Be Referee
Harold (Buck) Davidson, one
of the most popular wrestlers
ever to appear in' a Medford
ring, has been named referee of
Saturday night's grappling card,
mat impresario Mack Lillard
announced today. Davidson has
been in semi-retirement and
lives in Klamath Falls, where
he operates a business, taking
wrestling assignments only oc
casionally.
The card, first here in some
time, will feature three 45-min
ute matches, headed by two of
the country's top feminine grap'
piers, Gerry Hunter and Ella
Kowalski. Other bouts pit Yogi
Hussane against Joe Hahn and
Larry PresneU against Johnny
Dobbs.

champion Carl (Bobo) Olson's
non-title battle against Ralph
(Tiger) Jones tonight shaped up
to a 30-minute head-bumping
spectacle from a pair of scrap
pers who like to brawl in close
quarters.
Their meeting will be the fea
ture television show at 10 p.m.
(EST). Olson, who expected to
weigh 166 pounds, the heaviest
he ever has entered ' the ring,
was an . 8 to 1 favorite while
bookmakers offered Jone's sup
porters only 5 to 1. Jones ex
pected to weigh barely over the
160 pound middleweight limit.
To Go All Out
" Both fighters promised all-out
warfare, and Jones was confi
dent that he could win over the
10-round non-title distance to ad
vance into a title shot over 15
rounds at some date in the near
future. ; ' ' '
While Jones was hoping for a
title 'chance, Olson regarded the
fight as somewhat an experi
ment to determine how effective
he might be at the heavier
weight. .
Lacking a solid challenger for
the middleweight crown, both
Olson and his manager, Sid Fla
herty, have been contemplating
aiming for . a bout with light
heavyweight champion Archie
Moore or the former 175 pound
titleholder, Joey Maxim.

Schedule Shoot
Medford Junior Rifle club will
hold an indoor junior match on
March 13. The event will be at
the range in the Merrick buil
ding. It will be open to all shoot
ers under the age of 19.
The club here has been divid
ed into two sections to give all
shooters a chance to receive
more personal instruction to
ward preparation for the March
match and for the national com
petition to be held in Roseburg.
Medford juniors scored 686 on
Monday to win a three way
shoot. Ashland had 655 and
and Phoenix 441. Local team
members and their scores were
Phyllis Taylor 178, Kenneth
Boyd 178, Kent Ballard 169 and
Jim Fawcett 162.
