Halting Head-Hunting
New Delhi (U.R) India's
Northeast Frontier Agency (NE-
FA) has succeeded in stopping
head-hunting in the tribal areas
that form the northeast border
between India and China.
NEFA, which has been oper
ating for three years, did the job
without firing a shot. The task
was completed by gaining the
friendship of the tribes and per
suading them to change , their
customs.
The job was not easy, for the
culture and art of the tribes was
based on the possession of hu
man heads. The warrior who
had taken the largest number of
heads was entitled to the largest
tomb after ddath and for him
were built great bamboo horns,
400 feet long. And for centuries
the elders of the villages have
pointed with pride to the rows
of human heads which they se
cured as trophies in wars against
their neighbors.

a drug habit. There is no such
risk involved. There is on record
no report of any such ill con
sequence. Nitroglycerine (glyceryl trini
trate, glonoin) or sodium nitrite
or other vasodilator (dilator or
relater of blood vessels), pre
scribed for anginal distress is
practically harmless.
Yes, indeed, a person who has
not been warned about the rapid
action of nitroglycerin, when a
tablet is placed under the tongue,
may be frightened by the flush,
headache, sensation "of throbbing
or tension in the head, palpita
tion, etc., that occur within a
minute. -
It is advisable to take the first
dose of nitroglycerin lying down,
and to, remain flat on your belly
for five minutes.' If no flush,
throbbing or headache within
five minutes, probably the tab
lets are inert nitroglycerin is
very volatile and tablets rapidly
lost strength if exposed to the
air.'
But if the first cose doesn't
bring relief within five minutes,
take a second tablet, and if no re
lief a third one in another five
minutes.
Or double or triple the dose.
Or throw away the old tablets
and get a new vial that has not
been opened.
If I had anything like angina
pectoris or coronary occlusion
I'd take nitroglycerin at least four
times every day, in sufficient
dose to be sure it really kept
the arterioles (smallest arterial
branches) dilated, relaxed, open;
for free circulation and adequate
'supply of oxygen to my myocard
ium, working muscle which com
poses the heart.
I'd begin with tbalets contain
ing l200th of a grain of nitro-!
glycerin. I'd try such a tablet on
the dog and if it failed to make
my face flush, my head throb
etc., I'd wait five fminutes and
take two or three tablets. If
there was still no noticeable ef
fect I'd throw the tablets away
and get some l100th grain tab
lets, try 'em on the dog, etc.,
until I was sure the medicine
was reliable for emergencies.

here about the use of nitrogly
cerin by persons with heart
