The figures for 1952 through
1954 show a steady decline in the
number of traffic deaths in the
county. The total for 1952 was

last year it was 13.
So far this year, only one fatal
accident has been reported in
Jackson county. That occurred
on Jan. 1 when a Jacksonville
man was fatally injured in an
accident at a downtown Medford
crosswalk.
Sixth in 1952
In 1952, Jackson county's 24
traffic deaths placed it sixth in
the state for total number, be
hind Multnomah, Klamath,
Lane, Douglas and Clackamas
counties.
Last year, Jackson county
dropped to -11th on the list.
Counties having more traffic
deaths than Jackson county were
Multnomah, Clackamas, Coos,
Deschutes, Douglas, Klamath,
Lane, Linn, Malheur,, and Mar

with Jackson county ' with 13
traffic deaths.
The trend in two neighbor

Klamath and Douglas, also has
been down during the three
year period. Douglas county's to

22 last year, and Klamath
county's traffic deaths decreased
from 28 in 1952 to 19 in 1954.
Josephine About Same .
Figures for Josephine .county
have remained approximately
the same. The county had seven
deaths in 1952, six in 1953, and
eight in 1954. ; .
The death toll for all counties
last year was 420, a climb of 30
over the count for 1953, but still
well below the 457 fatalities in
flicted by Oregon 'traffic acci

Only two counties, Crook and
Wheeler, completed 1954 with
death-free traffic records. This
compared with one . county in
1953 and two counties in 1952.

Angry French Farmers Halt
Traffic, Give Away Spuds
Paris U.R) Thousands of angry farmers blocked highways
across the nation with carts and tractors Saturday in protest
against low farm prices and the drive against alcoholism by ousted
Premier Pierre Mendes-France.
It was the grand "day of protests" for the wine-drinking pea
sants who have been demonstrating with growing anger against
the Mendes-France anti-alcoholic campaign and the prices they
are getting for farm products.
They lined up 200 tractors in the famed cathedral town of
Chartres and began giving away sacks of potatoes rather' than
sell them at what they consider too small a profit.
Farmers blocked roads with long lines of creaking vehicles in
at least 10 departments of France and passed out anti-government
literature and waved placards crying "milk misery!"
The demonstrations were organized by the National Federa
tion of Agricultural Growers which will hold a national congress
in Paris next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Many, farmers Saturday carried bottles of wine from which
they drank regularly and flourished a bottle of milk reading:
"Reserved for President Mendes-France."

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN
Auto Production
Too High, Union
President States
Beverly Hills, Calif. U.R)
The president of the AFL Unit
ed Automobile Workers of Am
erica warned here Saturday that
automobile manufacturers
should "apply the brakes" to
the new-car market or face an
"economic disaster."
Earl Heaton said 5000 auto
dealers went out of business in
the past 22months, with nearly
600 failing because they were
overstocked.
Heaton contradicted the op
inion of Dr. Arthur F. Burns,
adviser to President Eisenhow
er, who has called for an ex
pansion of the new car market.
"This statement, in, the face
of : facts and figures, indicated
the ostrich-like attitude the Eis
enhower administration is tak
ing in viewing the overall econ
nomic picture today," Heaton
said. "If automotive manufactur
ers are taking their overstock
ing plans on the basis of state
ments like those of Dr. Burns,
they're in for a rough awakening."

Girl Scouts
Troop 10
Members of Junior High school
Girl Scout Troop 10 observed
the third birthday of the group
January 31. Two patrols pre
sented a program which com'
pleted their work toward their
good grooming badges. One
group modeled suitable clothes
for girls and the other portrayed
healthful requirements for good
grooming with a skit narrated
by Barbara Gordon.
An adult scout worker spoke
regarding a dinner for first class
scouts which the troop will at
tend soon. She explained that
party dresses are suitable for the
event although the dinner is
served in formal style. The event
closed with the serving of a dec
orated cake presented by the
leaders and two assistants.
