My first impression of it was
:' that the inventor had made it in
a hurry certainly without
' spending much time on the de
sign. For one thing, the over-all
length of the piece was eleven
inches while the length of the
barrel was only four. For an
; other, the trigger was unneces
isarily heavy and awkward, so
much so that when I pulled it
through the firing position it
very nearly took the skin off my
forefinger. '

stamp to examine it.

down the barrel against a bit of
white paper. The piece looked
factory clean.
"I paid him $100 for it," Sid
said with the air of a man who
has won a great bargain, "and
it's dirt cheap. There probably
aren't a dozen of them in Ameri
ca. As far as I'm concerned, I
couldn't have done better if I
had bought a $1000 bill with my
five twenties."
AIDS IN KNOWLEDGE

the wounded. As a result of his
harrowing experiences he wrote
many and such graphic letters

ganization that it was founded."
."See what I mean," said Karl,
handing the stamp to his son.
"I had forgotten there was such
a battle until the kid swallowed
the encyclopedia just now," '
I was abput to say something,
but Karl continued talking, tell
ing his son to look up the stamp
in the catalogue. "Watch - his
face," he .whispered to me,
"when he- finds out it's worth
$75." - .

tea was a splendid piece that
had seen much use. Though the
under side of the wings ; had
been worn down somewhat, the
mark was plainly visible in the
bright daylight. I could read it
now. It consisted of the letters
I HURD.
That was enough for me. Any
thing in the silver line marked
that way, or HURD, or even I-H,
almost certainly was made by
Jacob Hurd of Boston who died
in 1758 at the age of 56.
I kept the piece for better
than a decade until, three years
ago, when a friend of mine de
cided, that he wanted it as a
wedding gift for his niece.
He . complained bitterly at
first, but I was adamant, and
he finally handed over $325.
