former Medford high school
player, have been named at Ore
gon State College to aid new
head coach Tommy Prothro . in
the. 1955 campaign.
' Bob Watson, former standout
Medford gridder who played his
collegiate ball at UCLA, was ap
pointed backf ield coach, and
Bob Zelinka, UCLA freshman
coach last year, was named line
coach. Zelinka also played foot-
ball for the Bruins.

Announcement of the appoint
ments was made today by Jim
Barratt, assistant athletic di
rector. Barratt said , the selec
tions were made by Prothro who
recently was ' hired at Oregon
State after several years as
backfield coach at UCLA.
Prothro said he still is searchr
ing for a third assistant. A hold-,
over from the Kip Taylor regime
is Freshman Coach Dick Twenge.
Bob Watson, named backfield
coach at Oregon State college,
-was a 1946 graduate of Medford
high school. He was a backfield
star for the Black Tornado as
a quarterback and fullback in
1944 and 1945 and was rated as
one of the all-time Medford grid
'greats. Watson was an all-state
basketball center in 1946.
Rosburg, Holguin
Knot at Tucson.
Tucson, Ariz. (U.R) Bob
Rosburg, of San Fransisco, and
Tony Holguin, of Midlothian,
HI., led going into the second
round of the $10,000 Tucson
Open today but with a mob at
their heels.
' The two carded five-under
par 65s Thursday, one stroke
better , than George Bayen Los
Angeles, and Bud Holscher,
Santa Monica, Calif., who tied
at ( 66, and two strokes better
than the next r five top scorers
for the day : over the El Rio
course. ; ' '
Nearly 30 players carded be
low par first rounds and 19
shot par. Gene Littler, who had
been rated the favorite off his
Phoenix and Los Angeles titles,
was among those failing to
break", par, along with Ed Fur-
gol, PGA champion from St.
Louis; Dr. Cary Middlecoff and
many other winter circuit stars.
Tucson, Ariz. (U.R)--Oregon's
two entries in the Tucson Open
golf tournament trailed leaders
Tony Holguin and Bob Rosburg
by several strokes today. ,
- Bob Duden of Portland had a
72 in the opening round, while
Ralph Richter of Gearhart had

Kraut Packers association came
up with the gastronomic tidbit
that Americans last year con
sumed more than 8,000,000 cases
of sauerkraut and an estimated
12,000,000,000 hot dogs.

NCAA Cage Meet

vallis Monday, February 21,
has been established as the day
ticket applications for the West
ern Regional NCAA basketball
championships will first be ac
cepted, Athletic Business Man
ager Jim Barratt; announced
Tuesday. '
The regionals will be staged
at Gill Coliseum on Friday and
Saturday, March 11 and 12,
with Oregon State college and
Corvallis as hosts for the fourth
straight year. '
Barratt said any ticket appli
cations bearing a postmark prior
to February 10 would be return
ed immediately to senders un
filled. Each . customer will be
limited to four : tickets each
night. All correspondence should
be addressed to Barrett at Coli
seum 103 in Corvallis.
Two automatic entrantsin the
tourney will be the champions
of the Mountain States '. confer
ence and Pacific Coast confer
ence. The two other teams will
come from either two , at-large
clubs or from winners of the
Border conference and "Rocky
Mountain conference. Play-of f s
will be necessary to determine
the latter two entrants.

Mary Faulk Takes Lead
In Professional Start

Mary Lena Faulk, who turned
golf professional because "it
was either that or get a job,"
didn't take long to catch on to
her new trade.
Miss Faulk, former amateur
star from Thomasville, Ga.,
made her pro debut .Thursday
in the first round of the St.
Petersburg Women's Open tour
nament and showed no traces of
nervousness as she seized the
first-round lead with a five-un-der-par
69. - ' .-
Miss Faulk didn't take an ex
tra stroke as she collected five
birdies and 13 pars and her 69
total was even two strokes un
der men's par. Her brilliant play
gave her a one-stroke lead over
pretty Marlene Bauer of Sara
sota, Fla., and two -strokes over
Patty Berg of ' St. Andrews, 111.
TORNADO MATMEN TIP

Medford high's wrestling team
last night won its second match
of the season from Grants Pass.
The Tornado margin for the
bouts at Grants Pass was 28 to
16.
Medford won eight of the 12
bouts which counted, losing one
of the other four by forfeit.
The Tornado didn't do as
well in exhibitions. Grants Pass
took seven of these 13 bouts and
two were draws.

"limited-participation only" pol

Pointing out that "the main
objectives of West Point cannot
be subordinated to appearances
in athletic contests," an Army
source said Lt. Gen. Blackshear
Bryan, the Academy's superin
tendent, probably will recpm
mend a bowl appearance "only
once every three; to five years."

ward Hebert (D.-La.) Rep. Olin
E. Teague (D.-Tex.) and Rep. Le
roy Johnson (R.-Calif.) voted
unanimously at a surprise meet
ing Thursday to recommend that
Army appear in post season
bowl games "whenever invited."
Rep. Hebert said the board's
recommendation would be sent
directly to Mr. Eisenhower "who
will direct the Academy to fol
low the recommendation."
