When bigger and better gim
micks are needed to spur an
athletic team to fighting fury,
Grants Pass high has been
known to concoct them. And the
Cavemen have come up with an
other for their Southern Oregon
conference basketball series to
night and Saturday night with
Medf ord No. 1 Black Tornado.
Grants Pass is host to Medford
this evening snd the quintets
move onto the Tornado floor on
Saturday. But the two games
will .not end the activity this
week end in connection with the
series. The aftermath will be on
Sunday on Sixth street in GP.
Caveman Coach Ray Davis
and his aide, Gordon Prehm,
have made a bet with Gerry Hal
bert and Maxine Fender, GPHS
girls' physical education instruc
tors. If the Cavemen beat Med
' ford, just one game of the se
ries, the gals will have to push
the coaches down the main drag
in wheelbarrows. However, if
GP fails to upset the Tornado,
the coaches will have to do the
pushing while the players pull
the wheelbarrows with ropes.
Davis said, "Like all parades,

Rule Liked With
Modifications
New York (U.R) A majority
of 42 leading college coaches pol
led by the United Press favor
some form of professional bas
ketball's 24-second rule for next
season if the zone defense is
abolished. ' - ,
Ten coaches polled favor out
right adoption of the pros' 24
second rule to prevent stalling
11 advocate passage' of the rule
with certain modifications; while
15 expressed opposition. Two
other coaches thought the 24-second
rule feasible if the zone de
fense is abolished.
Oppose Bonus Rule
- The coaches could not agree
upon any clear-cut proposal that
might reduce fouling, although
most were against the present
"bonus" rule. They voted 17-10
against the pro practice of widen
ing the free throw lanes to 12
feet.
Under the , pro rules a team
must get off a shot within 24
seconds ofter it gains possession
of the ball and after a team has
committed six personal fouls in
uny period, the opponents re
ceive an extra free throw oppor
tunity each time it is fouled
thereafter during that quarter.
Jimmy Carter
Favored in Bout
Boston U.R) Lightweight
champion Jimmy Carter of New
York was the slight favorite to
1 end Tony DeMarco's victory
string at 15 when he meets the
Boston welterweight in a sched-
j uled 10-round non-title fight tc
'night at Boston Garden.
. Carter was rated on top by
, about 7-5 although he figured to
give six pounds away to the
highly-regarded North End bat
tler, who looked impressive in
past week workouts.
Eastern Oregon
Host to Owls
Xa .Grande (U.R) Eastern
Oregon ' plays host to Oregon
Tech in a week end Oregon Col
legiate Conference basketball se
ries here.
' Both teams are out of the title'
running, EOCE has a 5-5 mark
and OTI a 2-7 record.
Portland State, the confer
ence leader, hosts Seattle-Pacific
Saturday night.
Ski Conditions
Skiing conditions were re
ported fair today at Orater
Lake National park and the
outlook at Union Creek ap-'
peared good for the week end.
The park service reported
75 inches of snow at Crater
lake. South and west en
trances lo the park were open
to the rim. Chains or snow
lires were needed for the trip
from park headquarters lo
the rim. ,
Thirty inches of snow at
Union Creek were reported
hy the forest service. Pos
sible snow was the forecast
for the area. The tow operates
cnX Wednesdays. Saturdays
and Sundays.

ifliMs
this one will begin at the court
house. The foregoing sidelight on the
Tornado-Cavemen indicates that
the GP boys may be fired high
to overcome the Medfordites
who have handed them their
worst setbacks of the season.
Medford's loop leading cagers
aren't giving much thought, nev
ertheles, to the forthcoming ca
pers on the GP city street. They
are, however, ' suspicious of
Cavemen gimmicks and shenan
igans on the maplecourt and
have been making every effort
to be ready for whatever the
Cavemen come up with in the
two night series. "They'll be
ready for us. We're liable to see
anything and all," Coach Frank
Roelandt of Medford ventured.

PCL To Loan
To SD Fori
Ball Park
t By HAL WOOD
San Francisco (U.R) The Pa
cific Coast League, heartened by
baseball commissioner' Ford C.
Frick's crackdown on "loose
talk" about big league expan
sion, swung into a lavish park re
building ' program today with
San Diego the first club to get
into the gravy.
At its annual league meeting
yesterday, PCL directors voted
a $100,000 loan to the Padres
to help finance a stadium which
may be erected in the city's Bal
boa Park.
The loop also appointed Oscar
Vitt, former manager of the
Cleveland Indians, to work as a
"trouble shooter" for the presi
dent. 1 A three-man committee
was named to consider plans for
a league scouting system in other
top business of the meeting.
Big Plans
Claire Goodwin, newly elect
ed league president, said the
PCL was going ahead with plans
to become a powerful organiza
tion. The park rehabilitation proj
ect may. extend . to Oakland,
Portland and Hollywood where
the present stands are outmoded.
However; none pf the owners
concerned indicated they are
ready to discuss building plans
now.
San Diego's loan is to be , re
paid by taking five per cent from
the visiting club's share of the
gate receipts so that each team
gets 35 per cent instead of the
usual 40 per cent cut of the "net
receipts when on the road. The
difference will go to the league
to help pay for the park.

duled for Jan. 14 but was post
poned when Saxton suffered a
back injury while training. :
