Well, Ma'am, that isn't our
fault, is it? You tried to tell 'em;
and for years I have been telling
'em. But the poor geeks like to
dream they can get it in "shots'
at $7.50 per without bothering
their heads about diet, nutrition,
temperance, natural breathing,
exercise, care of the teeth or
other silly notions after all,
they can always dispel their in
feriority complexes with another
cocktail or highball.
Whether the racketeer soaks
the customer $7.50 or $3 per
"shot," there's no good reason
for administering vitamins that
way, if the customer can still
take nourishment by mouth. .
In rare instances of advanced
malnutrition it is necessary to in
ject into a vein many times more
than the normal daily require
ment of one or more vitamins,
One reader informs me that
vitamins are magic, for when
ever he gets utterly tird out
'and exhausted he 'drops in at
the . "clinic" and gets a "shot,"
and presently he is on his toes
again and in fine spirits. Do I
know anything else that will do
that? ,
I do not. But I believe a shot
of sterile tap water would have
the same effect.

Of Controversial Bill
Salem U.R) The origin of
a controversial bill regarding
control of betterment funds of
state departments was clarified
at a Ways and Means Committee
hearing when Sen. Howard Bel-
ton (R-Canby), co-chairman of
the committee, identified him
self as the source of the bill.
Harry Dorman, state - director
of finance, yesterday was the
target of criticism from the
Board of Control which accused
him of drafting the bill without
clearing it with the board, even
though it affected Board control
of the betterment funds.
Dorman yesterday told the
board that the request to draft
the bill had come from the Ways
and Means Committee but he
did- not identify Belton as the
individual source.

The Veterans Hour variety
show and radio quiz, sponsored
by the Myers-Holland Post 129,
American Legion, Central Point,
-and radio station KYJC for the
entertainment of the disabled
veterans at the Veterans Admin
istration Domiciliary center,
Camp White, will be presented
Friday ,t Feb. 11, at 7;45 p.m.
The radio quiz, a contest for
members, will be under the di
rection of Franklin "Jerry"
Girrard, who also writes the
script for the program. Five
members will answer questions
for valuable prizes donated by
the- merchants of the Rogue
River valley.
The variety show, with Dewey
V. Gearin, commander of Post
129, as master of ceremonies,
will feature the John B. Jones
troupe, a combination of west
ern and folk songs and hillbilly
music.
Also featured will- be Miss
Karen Britton, accordionist and
s singer. .
There will be other acts, in
cluding the new Camp White
orchestra under the direction
of Jimmie Rae.
Unit 129,' Ladies .auxiliary,
will serve doughnuts and coffee
after the program. The public is
invited. ;

granted unemployment compen
sation by a sympathetic official
who said it would have been

Fire Department Formed
In South of County
Ashland About 60 persons in
the rural area south of Ashland
have organized a volunteer fire
department for which articles of
incorporation have been filed at
Salem. Officers are Hugh Bar
ron, W. Lloyd Stewart and El
mer Hopkins. The department is
known as the Barron Volunteer
Fire company.
The subscribers have pur
chased a used '580-gallon Chev
rolet pumper fire truck which
is house at Klamath Junction.
Fire calls are made by calling
the Emigrant Lake cafe, Ashland
7248. The first call for use of
the truck was last Sunday when
the volunteers put out a blaze
at the home of Stewart, one of
the incorporators.
Oregon Veneer Firm Files Incorporation
Articles of incorporation for
Oregon Veneer company, Med
ford, have been filed with the
state corporation commissioner
in Salem.
According to plans announced
here earlier, the company will
build a veneer mill to cost an
estimated $300,000. Initial capi
talization is $100,000. Incorpo
rators are George Flanagan,
