Paf rof man 'Breaks Train of Thought'
To Prevent Golden Gate Bridge Suicides
San Francisco (U.R) A Cal
ifornia highway patrolman who
figures he has helped prevent
more than 250 suicides from the
Golden Gate Bridge said today
the way to do it is to "break
their train of thought."
Once he even threatened to
shoot a would-be jumper. The
man came down.
Each Different Problem
"Each one is a different prob
lem and has to be handled dif
ferently," said Patrolman James
A. Morgan. "But the one thing
that always works is distracting
the person from his purpose."
- Morgan, 43, is a veteran of 18
years with the California High
way Department. He has worked
in a patrol car out of the Golden
Gate Bridge office for the past
10 years, and blocking suicide
attempts is part of the routine.
' Official records show that
about. 135 persons have taken
a fatal 220-foot "plunge from the
world's longest suspension
bridge into San Francisco Bay
since 1937,'when the bridge was
opened. Morgan believes the
figure is too .low.
Doubtful Cases
"If there is any doubt about
a case it isn't listed in the rec
ords," he said. "I've seen more
than a hundred go over the side
myself."
Morgan believes there is a
definite pattern in Golden, Gate
suicides. Most of them occur be
tween 11 p.m." and 3 a.m. The
weather usually has been de
pressing. And, mysteriously, it
is more than likely , "three days
on either side of the wane of the
moont"
"A person's resistance is low
est after 11 o'clock at night,"
the patrolman said. "On top of
that, a lot of them- come out
after they've been drinking all
evening to get courage to jump."

A program for milk producers
of southern Oregon is planned
for the February meeting of the
Rogue River Jersey Cattle club,
whose membership includes Jer
sey breeders of both Jackson and
Josephine counties.
Guest speaker at the session,
to be held Sudnay, Feb. 13, at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. B.
Poyer, 186 Weightman st., Ash
land, will be Lynn Bramkamp,
manager of the California Milk
Producers Federation, with head
quarters in Sacramento. He will
discuss California's milk control
law . and statewide producer or
ganization. The customary busi
ness session of the club will also
be-' held with president D. -W.
Mongold occupying the chair.
Both the meeting and the noon
potluck luncheon which precedes
it are open to anyone wishing to
attend. Those planning to come
to the luncheon are asked to
bring food and their own table
service.

dentures as compared to 70 per

Heart Operation .
Over, Boy To Start
School on Monday
' Applegate Jimmy Christen
sen, 8, who has been released
from a California hospital after
recovering from a serious heart
operation, has returned to his
Applegate home. Jimmy's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Arion Chris
tensen, state that he expects to
return to the third grade at Ap
plegate school next Monday.
The boy was hospitalized for
a month after the operation, dur
ing which surgeous at St. John's
hospital in Santa Monica, trans
planted a blood vessel from his
shoulder to the region of the
heart in order that it might func
tion properly. Mrs. Christensen
reports that during Jimmy's stay
in the hospital, five other pa
tients from all parts of the
United States underwent delicate
heart .surgery at St. John's hos
pital, where surgeons specialize
in heart cases. !
Neighbors Assist. ,
Mrs. Christensen said Tuesday
that during the family's stay in
California neighbors cared for
the stock on their cattle ranch,
and that before their return,
women of the j neighborhood
cleaned the house and put every
thing in' readiness for their ar
rival. Earlier friends from var
ious parts of the county had spon
sored a community dance at
which more than $200 was col
lected and given to Jimmy for
his "heart fund,", and she said
the entire family is deeply grate
ful for the kindness and gener
osity of all who had helped; them.
. Jimmy has . an older brother,
11, and a younger brother who is
3 years old. v .

Distract Them
"If you can distract them
somehow from what they're try
ing to do you can usually save
them," he said. .
"This one guy comes out one
night and I spot him on the rail
in the center of the bridge. I tell
him to get down and he says he
won't. So I pull out my service
revolver and point it at him and
say 'If you don't come down
I'll shoot you.'
"The thought of being shot
scares hell out of him. He for
gets all about jumping in the
bay."
Morgan's job has its danger
ous moments. More than once
he has engaged in perilous
wrestling matches with people
poised on 'the brink of death.
"They've got superhuman
strength when they're like that,"
he said.
Job Has Rewards
The job has its rewards, too.
Once Morgan pulled back a 15-year-old
girl who was pregnant
and said she wanted to "get
even" with her boy friend by
killing herself.
"I told her that was exactly
what the guy wanted to get rid
of her. I told her the best way
to get even with him was to stay
alive," the patrolman said.
The girl is happily married
now and has four children. She
sends .Morgan a Christmas pres
ent every year. . ' i

should be Gable's brother or his

today. "So they tested me" in a

"When Gable saw me he said,
'Why, .there's my younger
brother.' It was ..uncanny. We
even have the same broadness
in the shoulders," said the 'actor
flexing his shoulder muscles.
"The director said we looked
like a twin act.
' "I don't think it's detrimental
to be compared to a big star,"

screen tests at four studios be
fore he finally won a contract
at Universal-International. After
a year, the studio fired him.
""They weren't interested in
me," he shrugged. "But I al
ways thought I was good. If
you don't, you have to get out
of the racket."
Joan, Crawford encouraged
Egan when he got a small role
in one of her: pictures. So did
pal Robert Mitchum, who in
duced Jane Russell to choose
Egan as her co-star in RKO's
"Underwater!" That role, his
first starring chance in an "A"
movie, won him good parts at
Fox and eventually a contract.
"I don't, think the field is
