Of UN Meeting
Thursday Night
UNESCO will be the topic of
a meeting of Medford chapter,
c Oregon United Nations' assoc
iation, set for Thursday, Febru
ary 10, at 8 p.m. in the YMCA.
Speaker will be Professor
DeWayne Johnson of Southern
Oregon college. Professor John
son, who is writing a doctoral
thesis on UNESCO, will discuss
how this agency of the United
Nations is a defense for peace.
Professor Johnson, assistant
professor of English at SOC and
director of information for the
college, has been with the Ash
land school two years. ' He
previously taught in El Camino
college, Lawndale, Los Angeles,
and for three years was with
the United Press bureaus in Ta
coma and Los Angeles.
Any person interested in the
United Nations is invited to at
tend the meeting. ' :

.dangerous habits of most people
"in driving an automobile.
The "Family Looks Ahead for
1955," a leaflet prepared by Miss
. Mary Beth Minden, Oregon State
.college, indicated that farmers
will have less income with ex
penses about the same as in pre
vious; years. Other families
should have about the same in
come as before, but all families
should adjust their spending to
their income, the leaflet said.
Mrs. L. W. Howell, a new
comer to the community, was a
guest. Next meeting will be on
s March 1 at the home of Mrs. Joe
Whipple.

Initiation Planned
By Moose Lodges
Women of the Moose will hold
a meeting and initiation tonight
at 8 o'clock in. the moose hall, 11
Newtown street. The ritual com
mittee is in charge of the enter
tainment and refreshments will
be served following the meeting.
- Medford Moose lodge will hold
an initiation ceremonv at the hall
Saturday, February 12, at 8 p.m.
A potluck supper at 6 p.m., fur
nished by Women of the Moose,
will honor the condidates and
their wives. A Valentine party
and dance will follow for all
Moose and their guests. No ad
mission will be charged.

the annual benefit luncheon
and card party sponsored by Al
pha Rho chapter of Beta Sigma
Phi at a regular meeting of the
chapter at the home of Mrs.

Keeneway drive, Monday eve
ning. Reservations may still be
made for the luncheon by call
ing either 2-5628 or 2-5512. The
deadline for accepting reserva
tions is Friday, February 11.
The event will be held at Rogue
.Valley Country club Monday,
February 14, at 12:30 p.m.
Bridge, pinochle and canasta
will.be played at the close of
the luncheon, and short enter
tainment feature is also plan
ned. Proceeds from the party
will be given to the pilot school
for exceptional children at Phoe
nix, Ore.

birthday, which is in February.
The next meeting of the chap
ter will be Feb. 21 at the home
of Mrs; Charles Marrs, Phoe
nix.
Hostesses for Monday's meet
ing were Mrs. Adlfinger and
Mrs. David Bergstrom. The pro
gram for the evening was pre
sented by Mrs. Lytle and Mrs.
Legg. Changes in the type of art
popular throughout the ages was
discussed, and Mrs. Lytle made
a 'charcoal sketch of Mfs. Budreau.
80th Birthday
Of Mary Moore
To Be Observed
Mrs. Mary: Ellen Moore, who
has lived in Jackson county 78
years, ' will celebrate her 80th
birthday February 15. Mrs.
Moore will honor at an open
house to be held at the home of
her grandson, Billy Abbott, 115
South Fifth street, Central
Point on Sunday, February 13.

tween the hours of 1 and 7 p.m.
Mrs. Moore is . the former
Mary Ellen Pankey, daughter
of Hampton and Nancy Pankey
who came to southern Oregon
when Mary Ellen was two years
old. The family lived in Sams
Valley, and as a child Mrs.
Moore attended the Sams Val
ley school.
After her marriage to, Russell
Moore, the couple lived for
many years near Dead Indian
Soda springs on Little Butte
creek.. Following the death of
Mr. Moore in 1942 she sold the
ranch and moved to Central
Point. '
Mrs. Moore, widely known
throughout the valley, recently
lost her eyesight and is now liv
ing at the Jackson County Farm
home near Phoenix. Until recent
years Mrs. Moore was active in
many organizations and is a
member of the Order of East
ern Star, the Rebekah lodge,
Women's Relief corps and the
Grange. Both Mrs. Moore and
her late husband served as mas
ter of Lake Creek Grange many
years ago.
Mrs. Moore has two daugh
ters, Mrs. James W. Clark,. Med
ford, and Mrs. Richard Christ
phier, Salem, three grandchil
dren and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was born in Illinois.

Hardings Home
From Trip South
McLeod Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Harding have returned home
after spending the past several
weeks in southern California.
The Hardings left in mid-December
and first visited in Vallejo
and in Oakland. Continuing to
North Hollywood, they spent
Christmas and the New Year hol
idays with relatives.
The Hardings particularly en
joyed a trip through Woodland
Hills in the San Fernando Valley
to see the elaborate Christmas
decorations, the houses on each
street being decorated in one
theme, and also the coronation
ceremonies for the queen of the
Pasadena Tournament of Roses.
They also attended the tourna
ment parade and game.
Another event was a smorgas
bord given by the Norwegian so
ciety, with costumed dancers giv
ing a program of Scandinavian
dances, and the couple attended
church services in St. David's
Episcopal church in North Holly
woo. The Hardings spent several
days in Death Valley, visiting
Death Valley Scotty's castle, and
spent some time at the ghost
town of Rhyolite, Nev., famous
for its early-day gold mining op
erations. They visited Furnace
Creek inn where an old 20-mule
team borax wagon is a tourist
attraction.
They returned home by way
of Las Vegas, Nev.

Roosevelt PTA -Makes
Plans for
Founders' Day
' Founders' day will be observ
ed by Roosevelt Parent-Teacher
association with a silver tea at
the meeting to be held Friday,
February 11, at 2:30 p.m. in the
school auditorium. This will
also mark the 50th anniversary
of Oregon Congress of-Parents
and Teachers. v
The-major project of Roose
velt unit is a 4-year scholarship
offered to a worthy student in
terested in training for teaching
in the elementary field of edu
cation. Mrs. Leigh Gustison will
outline the origin of the tuition
scholarship by the PTA. Miss
Isobel Carr, as a recipient ' of
this scholarship, will present
the views of the student. Miss
Carr attends Southern Oregon
college.
Hostesses for the meeting will
be mothers of children in the
third grade. Those in this area
who are interested in the school,
whether members of the PTA
or not, are invited to attend the
meeting.

Travels Souvth;
Son to Germany
Mrs. Herb Grey, 42 South Bar
neburg road, has left for Au
gusta, Ga., to visit her son and
daughter-in-law, Pfc. and Mrs
Herb Grey Jr. Private Grey is
assigned to duty with the Army
signal corps at Camp Gordon,
Ga. Mrs.. Grey made the trip
south by plane.
The Grey's younger son, Jim,
a corporal in an Army field artil
lery unit, left Monday night by
plane for Spokane to visit friends
at Whitworth college. From
there he will go to Camp Kilmer,
N. J., and then leave for duty in
Germany.
Film and Speaker
On PTA Program; ,
Skit Presented j .
Phoenix "A film concerning
tuberculosis and entitled "Dis
covery" was shown at a meeting
of Phoenix Parent-Teacher asso
ciation February 3. Miss Mary
Ellen Bell, public health nurse
for the Phoenix area, also spoke
on some of the services fur
nished by the health department
in this area.
In recognition of Founders'
day, a play was given showing
Founders' day in the year 2055
with characters dressed in space
helmets and revealing a future
time when teachers and parents
will journey easily from planet
to planet in rocket ships.
Several vocal numbers were
presented by the high school
girl's chorus under the direction
of Harry Kannasto, school music
director.
Refreshments were served by
mothers of, children in the sixth
grade at the end of the program
and business meeting.
Fried potatoes have a
