Sugar Declared Arch Enemy
M VM 1 J J t ' 11 ' I J
(Editor't note: This is the
second in a series of six arti
cles' dealing with dental
health. They are being pub
lished in cooperation with the
Southern Oregon Dental so
city in observance of. Na
tional . Children's Dental
Health week, to be observed
Feb. 7 to 13. The articles were
prepared under the supervis
ion of the American Dental
association.)
Sugar is the arch enemy of
your child's teeth. It has been
established beyond doubt that
sugar-rich foods and beverages
are the greatest enemy of dental
health.
One dental scientist, deploring
America's gigantic sweet tooth,
said we are each eating about
100 pounds of sugar a year
nearly three times as much as
we need for good nutrition.
Throughout the world, the re
lationship between sugar con
sumption and tooth decay can
easily be shown.
"It is well known that the
amount of caries (tooth decay)
any population experiences is
roughly proportional to its sugar
consumption," says the dental
scientist.
Eskimos As Example .
As one example, a study of
Eskimos shows that before con
tact with our civilization, their
teeth were practically free from
dental decay. When they began
to eat sugar and other carbo
hydrates foods' that had been
strangers to them tooth decay
for the first time became a real
problem.
Because dental decay is chief
ly a disease of childhood and
the teens, the problem of too
much sweets becomes particu
larly important for our chil
dren. Dentists agree that it is the
between-meal snack that is the
worst offender. A child who nib
bles oh candy, cookies or other
sweets several times a day in
vites dental decay because each
snack generates the production
of new enamel-destroying acid.
Sugar Common
Foods commonly eaten by
youngsters between meals often
contain large amounts of sugar.
It has been estimated, for ex
ample, that there are seven tea
spoonfuls of sugar in ' a nickel
candy bar; four to five teaspoon
fuls in a bottle of .sugar-sweetened
soft drinks; 14 teaspoonfuls
in a piece of cherry pie.
Parents are urged to substi
tute such other between-meal
snacks as nuts, popcorn, potato
chips, cheese or fresh fruits be
cause they appease the appetite
without leading to the harmful
decay-producing acids.
Both the dental and medical
professions have strongly recom
mended that school premises net
be used for the sale of confec
tions and sweetened beverages.
Detriments Outlined .
They point out that excess
sugar in the diet not only is det
rimental to dental health but is
detrimental to the general health
of children as well:
First, because it appeases the
appetite while adding little to
nutrition. ' "
Second, because it spoils the
appetite for more nutritious
foods.
- - Third, because it is stored up
in the body in the form of fat.

Greens Different; .
Man's Face Turns Red
Syracuse, N. Y. (U.Rk-A tow
ing service operator, Al Olson,
has learned there's, a difference
between green and green. It all
depends on where they are.
Olson was told to pick up a
green car for repairs. When he
reached the spot, he ' saw " two
green cars one with a light top
and green body, the other with a
green top and light body.
Olson picked the one in front,
drove it to the garage only to
learn, when the owner arrived,
that it was the wrong green, car.
In the meantime, the other
owner had reported his green
car stolen to police.
Olson's face was red.
