Si. Mary's high basketball
quintets will play Sacred
Heart of Klaraath Falls here
; today.
Girls' volleyball is slated for
; 1 p.m. Boys junior varsity and
varsity basketball games will
; ; follow.
, Horae and home eompeti
Hon betweea the two Caiholie
schools each year has become
a tradition. The action here
today completes the aeries for
this season. St. Mary's varsity
won from Sacred Heart 45 to
43 recently at Klamath Falls.
Laval -Meunier's shot with
seconds left gave the victory
margin.
It was visitor's night Friday
in the Jackson County B Lea
gue. All three 'traveling" teams
won and no changes resulted in
positions in the standings.
Undefeated Rogue River sub
dued Butte Falls 64 to 40, Tal
ent,.; No. 2 club in the loop,
bounced St. Mary's of Medford,
No. 3, by 46 to 32 and Jackson
ville outlasted Prospect 50 to
46. :
; Rogue River's Chieftains saw
the Loggers stay with them for
better than one quarter. The
Chiefs led 16 to 12 after the
opening stanza but Butte Falls
' rallied on top 22 to 20. Then
, Rogue River zipped to a 35 to 22
halfway ..standing. Third quart
er score was 48 to 34.
Gary Johnson tallied 20 points
for the Chiefs. Ted Stanfield of
Rogue River and Don Ellis of
Butte Falls had 16 apiece and
Clete Daily got 14 for the Chief
tains. Prospect was cold in its shoot
ing for most of three quarters
as it entertained Jacksonville
in a ragged, wild game. Period
margins all favored Jackson
ville 10 to 6, 25 to 19 and 41 to
31. Ron Couser was high man
for the fracas with 18 Prospect
markers. Dick Sanford got 16
and Gary Heuners 15 for the
Redskins.
Talent, a rugged, hard-driving,
ballhawking gang, was in front
throughout over St. Mary's but
didn't have command for certain
until well into the third quarter.
The Bulldogs tight defense kept
most of the Crusader shooting
at long range. St. Mary's made
the shots with fair consistency
but Talent seemed to get most of
the advantages. That didn't help
the spirit of the Crusaders al
though they scrapped hard.
Big Quarters
Each team had a big quarter
in the first half. Talent ran up
a 15 to 6 bulge as the Crusaders
got only one field goal in the
first panel. St. Mary's held Tal
ent to a singleton from the field
in the second quarter and out
scored the Bulldogs 13 to 6. The
Bulldogs had a 21 to 19 edge at
the half. Tim Dugan got six SM
points in the chucker.
George Zickefoose and J.
Lloyd Wood hit shots for 25 to
19 as the quarter opened but
Tony Miksche and Laval Meun
ier swished SM buckets to nar
row to 23 to 25. Gordy Thore-

son, Jim MCADee ana wouu
scored from the field to help
Talent jump away and at the
end of three quarters the Bull
dogs lead was 35 to 27. In the

Portland (U.R) The Port

Southern Oregon 75-63 here Fri
day night to almost cinch at least
a first place tie in the Oregon
Collegiate Conference basketball
race.
The Vikings, with a game also
last night against SOCE and one
Tuesday against Eastern Oregon,
would have to lose both to get
bumped out of first place.
Portland State staged a second
half rally to defeat the Red Raid
ers. The game was tied at 30-30
at halftime.
Ron Nenow gathered 19
points for Portland State for in
dividual game honors. Bob
Smith led SOCE with 18.

Nielsen Breaks Indoor
Record; Santee Trails
New York (U.R) Gunnar
Nielsen of Denmark dogged Wes
Santee's heels until the final
lap last night and then passed
him with a spectacular finish
ing kick to win the Wanamaker
mile in a new indoor world re
cord time of 4:03.6.
Antonelli Inks
$20,000 Pact
New York U.R) Johnny
Antonelli, one of the heroes in
the New York Giants' 1954
World Series sweep, signed his
1955 contract today at a sub
stantial raise that brought his
salary to about $20,000.
The 24-year-old lefty, a $65,
000 bonus baby when he led the
National league in a won-lost
percentage with a 21-7 record
and in earned run average with
2.24. Antonelli is the first south
paw to win both honors since
Carl Hubbel of the Giants turn
ed the trick in 1936.
In the World Series against
the Cleveland Indians, Antonel
li won the second game, 3-1,
and then came back with only
one day of rest to pitch 1 2-3
innings of hitless relief in the
fourth game, striking out Vic
Wertz for the final out.
Public Relations
Said Lacking by
State Game Body
Corvallis (U.R) The State
Game Commission should pay
more attention to public relat
ions, it was suggested here Fri
day at the midwinter meeting
of the Orgon Wildlife federation.
Claude Cox, speaking for the
Santiam Fish and Game Associa
tion, said the commission wasn't
getting across the reasons for
actions it takes such as setting
seasons and adopting other regu
lations. He suggested agents in the
field pay more attention to pub
lic relations and that members
of the commission attend more
sportsmen's meetings.
SEATTLE U. WINS
Seattle (U.R) Seattle Uni
versity had a torrid night from
the field Friday night and
downed Portland University 98
83 in a racehorse basketball
game here.
Nielsen's time cracked the
4:03.8 world indoor mark set
by Santee in Boston only last
Saturday.
Actually, Santee, the cocky
22-year-old Kansas cowboy who
predicted he would hit the tape
around "4:02" last night, fin
ished third but was dWarucd
second place when Fred Dwyer
of the U. S. armed forces track
team, the runnerup, was dis
qualified. Starts Drive
With two laps remaining in
the race, Santee was out in front
by two'yaras ov
Nielsen was running third. As
the capacity crowd of 16,000
cheered Dwyer on, Nielsen sud
denly started his drive in the
final lap and passed both San
tee and Dwyer from third place.
At this point, Santee appeared
to become rattled and as Dwyer
attempted to pass him on the
inside while the three men were
rounding the final turn, the
lanky Kansan stretched his arm
out and nudged Dwyer on the
neck. Santee kept pushing Dwy
er in an-apparent effort to move
him on and. Dwyer, apparently
misunderstanding the Kansan's
action, suddenly turned and
grasped Santee around the
waist.
Both Santee and Dwyer fin
ished in that unique position as
the speeding Nielsen won by
some 15 yards.
Boxing Matches
Cancelled by PAL
The novice boxing tourna
ment scheduled last night by
the Police Athletic league was
cancelled.
PAL officials said they were
not able to get enough partici
pants for a card.
However, plans were an
nounced for an all-out effort to
stage a big card at Merrick's
arena on March 5. Club officers
said that an effort will be made
to get Jackie Puscas from Eu
gene and a number of sockers
from Portland.
AFTER GUGLIELMI
Washington U.R) Coach
Joe Kuharich said Saturday he
will confer Monday with Notre
Dame quarterback Ralph Gug

passer "will wear a Washing

son." Guglielmi was the Red
skins No. 1 choice in the Na
tional Football League's draft of

LSU Fires
Gus Tinsley
Baton Rouge, La. (U.R)
Louisiana State university Sat
urday fired football Coach Gay
nell (Gus) Tinsley and accepted
the resignation of Athletic Di
rector R. P. (Red) Heard.
A committee was named to
seek replacements, although no
date was set for it to report to
the school's board of supervisors,
which took the action in a four
hour executive session Saturday,
Chairman Lewis Gottlieb said.
Top candidate for the coach
ing post appeared to be Stanley
Galloway, coach at Southeastern
Louisiana college, who ran up
an unbeaten, untied season this
year. Top prospect for the ath
letic director job was considered
to be Jim Corbett, former LSU
athletic publicity director and
now with the National Broad
