As We Live
Lonely, She'd Remarry,
But How To Meet Men?
- As people grow older, Jthey are
likely to become lonelier. This
is especially true if they are
widowed. A woman writes:
(Q) f'l am a widow of 48,
all alone and very lonely. I
would like very much to have
male companionship and mar
ry again, if I find the right
man. There must be lonely
widowers who would like to
meet a woman like me and I
wish I knew where to find
them. People always say your
minister can help you but I
went to mine and he said there
wasn't anything he could do.
It is also said that parties and
clubs are good places to meet
people, but is is no fun to go
to those places alone. I don't
know where to turn for help.
What do you suggest?"
(A) Your minister may feel
that you expect him to find' a
husband for . you. He probably
feels he should
not become in'
volved. I am
sure he could
and would in
troduce you to
both men and
women of suit

congenial . in
terests if you
Dr. Hurlock

him that you are lonely, and
wanted companionship.
FurtKermore, he could tell you
what community organizations
have people "working in them
who would be' congenial to you.
For example, would you find
congenial companionsnip in . a
hospital where you did volun
teer work several days a week,

children? Knowing you and your
interests would give him a basis
on which to advise you.
At any age, it is difficult for
a woman to find a husband just
because she is lonely and -wants
companionship. It becomes in
creasingly difficult as she grows
older. Being alone is likely to
make a woman over-eager, and
this militates against her attrac
tiveness to a man.
It would be far better if you
developed new interests and
friendship with both women and
men so that your life would no
longer be lonely. Then with a
new point of view, you would be
more attractive to men because
you would be more interesting
and less obviously anxious to
find a husband. ' '

Most vegetarians are .ex

comes to ' a discussion of diet.
They have many nasty descrip
tions for people who like a good
steak. The nastiest is "flesh

of a. non-vegetarian was origi

observed, "I judge that a strict
vegetarian will live ten years
longer than a habitual flesh
eater while suffering in the aver
age less than Half as much sick

Get It Right
That crack about having a

credited to Mark Twain, Irving

Experiments
To Bear Out
Chicago (U.R) Experiments
with cats and monkeys at North
western University seem to bear
out the new ideas about the re
tirement of elderly persons.
The animal experiments indi
cate that old people or those
with nerve injuries should not
be forced into idleness.
The remarkable experiments
are part of a research program
conceived by Dr. Jules Masser-
Ed Wynn's Wife
To File for Divorce
Hollywood (U.R) Comedian
Ed Wynn's wife, the former
Dorothy Nesbitt, plans to file
suit for divorce today in nearby
Santa Monica superior court, ac
cording to attorney James J
Needleman. '
Needleman, who represents
both Wynn, 68, and his blonde
wife, 44, said Mrs. Wynn, a
New York and Palm Beach
socialite, will charge the come
dian with mental cruelty. .
The couple has worked out a
satisfactory property settlement,
Needleman said.
The Wynns married in Las
Vegas, Nev., July 31, 1946.
The comedian was quoted as
saying:
"I have a year to woo her
back, and I'm going to try be
cause she's such, a lovely per
son. Our relationship will con
tinue to be one of friendship
and cooperation. .
It didn't matter what had fcecpme of that original piece of
crude paper upon which A. Lincoln had written the message
that began: "Fourscore and seven years ago ..." Sensing
the impermanence of spoken words, Lincoln himself de
clared: -o -V-.
"The world will little note nor long remember what we say
here . . ." But his words were caught and preserved for all
time by the newspaper presses of the nation.
Nor did it matter that the singing words of Homer, his '
Iliad and Odyssey, were spoken from memory, for
there were scribes who wrote them down and kept
them fresh and living for all mankind.
Yes, the written message, and chiefly the printed message,
is the one that lives. But more than that, the written mes
sage is tangible as well as permanent. You can return again
1 ancj again to it, clip it out, pass it on to others.
Without wishing to profane Lincoln's glorious words, or the
ancient classics, The Mail Tribune asks you to consider the
proposition that the written rnessage is the one that lives
in terms of advertising.
- .... - . - ,- ..... ......
The printed page, rich in detail, exact in its message,
can be studied by the reader . . . not fifteen seconds,
not a minute but for an hour if the reader so wishes
. . v referred to the following day . week . . month. '
But, more importantly, from the psychological point of view,
the printed advertisement is a message read willingly.
When Mrs. Smith sits down with her Mall Tribune she is'
asking to be sold; she wants to know about the new cake
mix., And Mr. Brown wants to study the features of the
new cars. v
The MAIL TRIBUNE wishes to remind merchants and
. businessmen .of the basic .wisdom of building your
advertising promotion around VISUAL PRINTED media.
. In other words, if you want your advertising message

With Monkeys, Cats 'Seem
Ideas Regarding Retire
man, noted Chicago psychiatrist
Light on Behavior Expected
Masserman and Dr. Curtis
Pechtel, psychologist in charge
of the experiments, believe that
research with animals will shed
light on many problems of hu
man, behavior. -
Cats and monkeys are placed
in a special cage. They are
trained to push buttons which
open the doors of feed ooxes.
Meanwhile, researchers study
every aspect of their behavior.
The animals then undergo
brain surgery, which cuts down
their efficiency in operating the
devices.
Pechtel said .that an animal
kept in idleness after the sur
gery never regains its efficiency.
But one that is placed in the cage
and retrained does regain at
least some of its ability.
Monkey Can't Remember
A monkey kept idle for a few
weeks after brain surgery can't
remember for even a. few sec
onds under which of two in
verted cups its food has been
placed.
But a "re-trained", monkey
will have little trouble with the
problem. .'
Masserman and Pechtel be
lieve ,the same sort of mental
declinef occurs in human beings
who are forced into retirement
arbitrarily. . .. . ;
They plan to present some of
their findings from seven years
or research . with monkeys and
cats in a paper to be presented
at the American Psychiatric As
sociation's meeting in Atlantic
City, N.J., next May,
