Physician TeSIs of
Sterilizing Cancerous
pone in Girl's Leg
Los;-Angeles U.R) A North
Holloywood physician told yes
terday how he removed a can
cerous bone from the thigh of a
jpO-year-old girl, cooked it in a
Sterilizer to kill the growth as
he lay on the operating table
3rad then replaced it in her leg.
Z Dr. Vernon P. Thompson first
told of . the operation Saturday
iefore a convention of 2000 phy
sicians of the American Acad
emy of Orthopedic Surgery.
- He said the girl had a local
ized cancer in a 6 inch piece ofj
tone. He said hie was reluctant
to use plastic or metal parts for
the missing bone because the
woman, at 20, had a long life
expectancy and there was no as
surance substitutes would last
"that long.
Hip Joint Frozen
' Thompson said the hip joint
had to be frozen for the 'rare
and dramatic operation.
- He cut a 6.4 inch piece of the
femur out, put it in a steam pres
sure sterilizer to kill the can
cerous cells and then fitted it
back in, using two metal screws
. to toenail it into the bone on the
lower end and forming a graft
with bone shavings in the hip
joint.
The bone itself was deadened
by the heat, but during the time
the woman was bedridden a
framework of blood cells and
tissues to grow upon formed.
Thompson said the girl spent
nine months in bed before being
able to walk on crutches follow
ing the-first operation. When she
did begin walking with crutches
the bone cracked but in suc
ceeding operations he strength
ened it with a splint from the
girl's shin bone.
Walks Slowly , - -...Hesaid
iske-tww" is able to
walk slowly with a noticeable
limp and is working at a full-
time job.
Thompson, now retired, was
on the staff of the Los Angeles
County hospital when he per
formed the surgery five years
ago. -
Such an operation had never
before been tried because of the
extreme rarity of the type of
cancer the girl suffered, and Dr
Thompson said he has no knowl
edge that it has been tried since.

Means of Improving
Tourist Industry
In Area Discussed
The value of the tourist in
dustry to Oregon and things that
can be done to improve it was
the topic discussed at yesterday's
noon Chamber, of Commerce
roundtable discussion by the
main speaker.
Mrs. Agnes Berry, president
of the Jackson County Motel
Owners association, emphasized
that one of the biggest 'tourist
complaints along the Rogue riv
er is the high cost of a non-resident
fishing license for just a
few minutes fishing time.
Would, Increase Revenue
She said that the present cost
of $5 for one week's angling
could be lowered to "even $1
a day," and the State Game
commission would ' "receive
more money than before.". She
added that as it stands now. "the
people feel they are being
taken."
Other factors which will aid
in keeping tourists in the area
an extra day, the speaker con
tinued, include modern highway
construction, historical markers
and well-marked turnoffs. i
Mrs. Berry suggested that lo
cal residents could aid the tour
ist business by knowing at least
one place of interest to recom
mend. She added that "cour
tesy" really counts in making
people return again to the
Rogue valley for their vacations.
She cited one couple from North
Carolina who have returned
to the valley three times in
seven years, staying at the
Berry motel, Rogue Woods, near
Trail.
'New Rail Service
Robert Holmes, district freight
and passenger agent for South
ern Pacific, spoke briefly on the
inauguration of motor trailer on
railroad flatcar shipments, call
ed "piggyback" service to the
Northwest.-
Next Monday's roundtable
luncheon will concern Pacific
Telephone and !; Telegraph's
growth in the area and Oregon,
as well as the weekly .swapping
of "rumors" in the Rogue valley.
All meetings are in the Jackson
hotel.

The manacles" were re-,
moved long enough for Judge
Tucker to marry him to 32-year-old
Stella Gubala, the woman
who became Pruszewski's
"whole life" since he stabbed his
first wife in 1948.
Lonely Honeymoons
The bride and groom looked
forward to loney honeymoons.
Pruszewski was to be sent to
Stateville Penitentiary to serve
out his term. His bride will wait
for him in Chicago.
But neither the bride nor the
groom let the years, they may
have to spend apart discourage
them. " ' .
Like any other bride, Stella
went on a gay party with her
girl friends Sunday night. Prus
zewski spent the night before
his marriage lodged in Cook
County Jail.
"We're just two people who
love each other," Stella had
said earlier.
Stella has stood by Pruszew
ski ever since he went to prison.
At one point he was sentenced
to die. She helped finance his
appeal and even typed his legal
briefs with the result that the
State Supreme Court granted
a new trial just 48 hours before
the scheduled execution.
Originally Faced Death
Pruszewski, a naval veteran,
stabbed his first wife with a
butcher knife as they embraced.
At first he was declared insane,
but the death penalty was im
posed after he regained his rea
son.
At the end of his new trial
early this month, Pruszewski
was sentenced to 14 years' im
prisonment. '
. However, his lawyer hopes to
obtain a parole next year on the
grounds that Pruszewski has
been in' custody ever since the
slaying. " ' . - ; -
- Stella has known Pruszewski
for -10 years. When questioned
about the death of his first wife,
she says "I ' don't hold ' that
against him." ' - ' ' ' " :-.
"I'm going to wait for him,"
she said. V - ' - .
