Broken Troth Better
Than Unhappy Marriage
There are times when it. is
better to break an engagement
than to go through with a mar
riage that is doomed to failure
from the start.
(Q) "Last winter my daugh
ter became engaged to a young
man whom the had known in
college. We announced her
engagement in our local paper
and gave a party for her and
her fiance when the 'an
nouncement was made. They
planned to be married last
September but kept putting
off the date, During the sum
mer she spent two weeks
. Tisiting his parents, and when
she came home she was very
vague about when they were
to be married Finally she ad
mitted that she had broken her
engagement but asked us not
to discuss it outside the family.
Now I am always being asked
by my friends when our
daughter is going to be mar
ried. I don't .know just what'
to say or how to handle this
problem. Will you please give
m some advice?"
Since the engagement was an
nounced formally, 'its termina
tion should also be announced.
Simply send a notice to your
your local paper to the effect
that: "The engagement of Miss
So-and-So and Mr. So-and-So
has been terminated by mutual
consent," with the request that
it be printed in the society news
items.
Chances are that most of your
friends will see the notice or will
hear about it from i mutual
. friends. There
will unques
tionably be a
lot of specula
tion about the
reason for the
break, but this
will be behind
your back and
you will 'not
have to answer
questions. :
