."A specific is a remedy which

Quinine for malaria,' for in
stance. I pointed out that no
medical authority has conceived
a rational explanation- for the
alleged curative effect of colchi
cine -on gout or gouty arthritis,
'But' then, no medical authority
has explained how quinine pre
vents or cures malaria.' '
':But who am I to Question the
soundness of these solidly estab
lished medical principles, -be
liefs or opinions?
I never saw a case of gout in
hospital or private practice, and I
saw just one . case of malaria
When I was an intern and one
case when I was in practice, in
Penn Yar. Oh, yes, I saw numer
ous cases in hospital and private
practice,, in which some: doctor
had diagnosed malaria without
even trying to find the Plas
modia in the blood. These all
proved to be some other disease.
-. The hospital case was a dandy,
tertian malaria (chill every third
day, in a laborer who had come
from a southern district Where
malaxfa was endemic to work
on a construction job in' Buffalo
where there was nq malaria and
probably is -none teday. We
demonstrated, the' Plasmodia in
the red -.blood corpuscles in a
drop of blood taken from the pa
tient in chill, for classes of
medical students. '
In order to preserve the status
quo the professor asked u to
give the patient only inert cap-suits-
(of - rochefle salts) instead
of quinine, for a few days, so he
could, have allhis students see
the malarial organisms under the
microscope at the bedside.
At the time I felt guilty about
it. I debated with my conscience
whether we were justified : in
withholding quinine, the specific
for malaria, for even a few days.
But I went along with the pro.
feasor's wish and did the.Tpa
tient come to disaster? Huh. In
the course of ten days, although
the patient received little or no
quinine, the chills ceased, the
fever, disappeared, the patient
felt so well we couldn't persuade
him to stay any-longer, and the
malarial Plasmodia disappeared
from his blood.? i
i Quinine a specific for malaria?
S Had we given that patient all
the quinine we thought he need
ed the cure could not have been
more spectacular.
Many,' many times I have
wished I never saw a case of
malaria.
S Anyway, I - am consoled with
the certainty that I have never
seen a case of rabies in man and
200,000 real : doctors say the
same thing -and I have never
seen a case of gout either.-
