Ax-Cow-Plow Cycle Blamed by Scientist
Madison, Wis. (U.PJ A
University of Wisconsin scien
tist says man's impact upon the
world's natural plant life in
most parts of the globe can be
described in four words ''ax,
cow, plow, desert." .
John T. Curtis, professor of
botany and a well-known ecolo
gist, . said this is "not entirely
a pessimist's view of the world,
but a nearly true reporting of
Babylon, , of Jerusalem, of Car
thage, and of parts of China and
the Orient." , - . f :':
, He added that , "it is too close
to the truth for dangerously
large areas in the United States."
Curtis said that man tends to
cut down the trees, domesticate
animals which need grain which,
in turn, converts the fertile soil
into arid wasteland. ; -;
He ;said soil conservation in
the future may "insure that the
ax-cow-plow cycle does not go
to completion" and create a desert.

Your Health and Its Gare
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D.
'Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady,

REMEMBER WHO INVENTED THIS DEGREE
r7 1
I have yet to find a newspaper
writer who makes more frequent
use of the first person singular
pronoun than
I do. -
The 19 th
century affec
tation "we"
"the writer,"
"your corres
pondent" etc.
is as quaint' as
saying "limbs"
when you
mean legs. "
i Dr. Bradr V As an avowed
quack I hereby serve notice on
all concerned that I invented the
degree P. H. D. before any uni
versity or other institution ever
thought of it, much less granted
it to any one.
So I alone know what P. H. D.
denotes, although many readers
have guessed correstly about it
since I first mentioned it here
last Monday. P.H.D. stands for
Doctor of Personal Health.
As I have already stated, no
university is .authorized to grant
the degree, but it wouldn't be
difficult to persuade me to ac
cept the first honorary P.H.D.
degree from an accredited
school, provided the school first
set up an honest course or de
partment of personal health, hy
giene and prevention of disease
under a professor who has had
not less than forty years of teach
ing experience.
No.-You're wrong this time. I
couldn't afford to take the job,
although I've always wished and
I wish now that I could have
Eight-Legged Frogs
In Ohio Farm Pond
Ripley, O. OJ.R) -Believe it
or not, but eight-legged frogs
are jumping all over Oliver
Rush's farm pond near here.
No one seems to know why,
but scientists from two univer
sities are determined to find the
answer.
Rush first discovered . "the
strange creatures last Septem
ber. He caught eight of them
after noticing each had more
than the normal number of legs.
Some found their way to Dr.
Robert Hefner, head of Miami
(O.) University's zoology depart
ment.' "I never saw or heard any
thing like it," Dr. Hefner said.
"Oh, a few isolated instances of
multilegged frogs but never
more than 20 in a single pond."
Ohio State University also has
been supplied some specimens
for study. .
The richest of all the world's
known-, uranium deposits, and
perhaps the most closely guard
ed, is the Shinkolobwe mine in
the southern Belgian Congo.

I'm hot facetious about it.
I believe neglect of this field of
