Judge Advises on How To Slay Married
Madison. Wla. JflJJD A Wis
consin, supreme court - justice
who handled - hundreds of : di
vorce cases as a Milwaukee cir
cuit judge before moving to the
state's highest court has some
advice about how , to stay mar
ried. 4
"There is no such thing as a
completely frictionless marriage
and many tensions disrupt the
flow of married bliss," accord
ing to Justice Roland Steinle.
"The small things keep piling
up until a couple can no longer
endure the sight of each other.
If you ask them why, they can't
tell you. All they can say is that
it is a lot of things.? ... . r.
He gave these seven rules for
easing the tensions and making
married life happier: .fr (
1. Be as nice to your spouse
as you are to yourself.
2. Maintain a sense of humor.
3. Don't take your problems
to outsiders. -. " -: j r
4. Don't forget small atten
tions. -
5. Advice of parents should be
sought only on: infrequent and
really important occasions. Most
problems should be worked out
between the husband and wife.
6. Keep financial matters on a
business plane, with the . idea
that marriage is a partnership
financially as well as in other
ways. . ..".
7. Marry with- the! feeling ;that
divorce is : illegal and marriage
as permanent. ;..--

There he goes again, snarled
several former colleagues who
were caught stringing customers
along with the shopworn dodge,
trying to destroy people's faith
in the profession of which , he
was formerly . .
In the talk I said that away
back when Topsy was a colt (in
my Perm Yan days, that is), "a
few physicians who dared to
think for themselves voiced the
opinion, that so-called 'growing
pains' v were perhaps premoni
tory of rheumatic fever." I
quoted ' this statement from
French's Index of Differential
Diagnosis, 3rd ed., 1917: V
"There is no doubt that 'grow
ing pains' occur in healthy chil
dren, quite independently of
rheumatism; but any complaint
of growing pains" (I wonder if
any child ever complained of
growing pains) "should lead to
careful investigation of the pa
tient's history and of the condi
tion of his heart A family his
tory or past personal history of
chorea (St Vitus's dance) "will
often be made out; and not rare
ly examination of the heart will
lead to the discovery ox valvular
disease." , . '.. : ? , -, .
Now. comes a note in language
which even I would not use in
addressing a colleague, express
ing satisfaction with a way I
dated myself citing an authori
ty, who may have had some
weight forty or fifty years ago.
Have n I studied . nothing pub
lished in the past few decades? ;
Yahbut, I have found noth
ing in current medical literature
that throws more light on the
question of "growing pains"
than did the authority I cited.
Here Td like to assure Barents
