"heroes' or leaders, affected the
civilization of the Vikings, on the
one hand, and of the Chinese dur
ing the time of Christ, on the
other. ..' .' 1 '
'The warrior philosophy of the
Northmen carried .their influ
ence throughout Europe,-and it
is still being felt as a vital torce
and tradition, he indicated.. The
philosophy developed by Bud
dha, that all change is "the cen
ter of evil," and that the ideal is
contentment, put the "grip of
the cold shadow. of death'" on
what was a great and developing
civilization Or. Wilson saidV;
Many "Shadows" .
; In Western civilization, the
speaker' declared, there "have
been many J "shadows" :- which
have influenced progress, but of
these the -greatest and longest
has-been, that of Christ, whose
philosophy of hope has. gripped
the-west. . : .. " ; - - w'
It is this holding .to -an-ideal,
and to : the ideal of ' a leader,
which; can make the difference
between , progress and decay, he
declared, and he went on to
speculate what kind of a nation
this would have been if, for in

hero of Aaron Burr rather than
George Washington., ; .V, ; V i
The "shadow" of the Declara

had great effect in America, Dr.
Wilson said. "No election in our
history was as bad -as it might
have betfn if it had not been for
the unseen influence of the De
claration of Independence in the
background," he added.
In 1955, he said, we have the
advantage of. "generations of
shadows" which have affected
our lives, and given many of our
leaders character and quality of
which he can be proud.
Today's Rapid Change " '
But the leaders of today are
confronted with a situation
which can be changed by tomor
row, he pointed out, in contrast
to past generations when gen
eral conditions 10 or 20 years
ahead could be forecast. It is
now impossible to clook ahead,
Dr. Wilson said, and as a result
we must discover the fixed prin
ciples which can be of comfort
and help to us.

To Use
Task
The central business of life re
mains the building of a man, Dr.
Wilson declared, and in that cen
tral and important job we must
fall back on the fact that only
reason separates man from the
animals. - '.- 1 ,
If we give our children the gift
of reason, and make them wise
and good, then we" will be doing
the only thing we can to see that
mankind will build well for the
future, he concluded.

Fear of Becoming

" By JOSEPH W. GRIGG
United Press Correspondent
Editor's note: The Western allies
are deliberately taking the risk of re
vived German militarism by rearming
the Bonn republic. The menace of
Russian Communist aggression is
more . dangerous.: The - question al
ready is arising, however, how long
it may be before resurgent Germany
looms as a decisive factor in the
world picture. Following is the first
of three dispatches assessing the situ
ation by the Uf. chief correspondent
and manager ior Germany.
Bonn, Germany - U.R) The
Western allies are about to rear
a colossus in Western Germany.
For better or wore,vthey are
rearming ; the ? country which
they forced : to unconditional
surrender only 10 years ago.
Regardless of French fears,
the , United States and Great
Britain have decided that the
Bonn Republic must be armed
as I the first line of defense
against a possible Soviet Rus
sian, attack, even though they
know they . are taking a calcu
lated risk of reviving aggressive
German - militarism.
But the question already is
being- asked: How long will it
be before the colossus of Ger
many overshadows the colossus
of Russia? .
On . the surface,, there is no
comparison between Russia and
Germany.
Size Can't, Compare .
Russia, with a -population of
200,000,000, spans Europe and
Asia from' the Baltic and Medi
terranean seas to the Pacific: Its
area is 8,708,070 square miles.
West Germany's population is
50,000,000. Its area is 94,692
square miles. " ; -
. Russia's armed. . forces'; are
enormous.' They total more than
4,000,000 men. Russia has' 175
army divisions. - u
i West Germany's armed forces
will be small. They will total
500,000 a 12-division army ' of
400,000 men, an 80,000 man air
force and a 20,000 man coastal
navy.-.. : V;:."'.; ::---. ' --
But Russia . is frightened at
the prospect of German arma
ment. The Kremlin ' remembers
how . the German 'army cut
through its Red army in 1941
like a knife through warm but
ter. :; .- .:-'- , - -
Germany is compact, v where
the Soviet Union is sprawling.
Germany's transport network is
among the world's best.; Russia's
is among the world's worst.
Germany's industry is' effi
cient. -. Russia's - is , inefficient.
Where Germany's factories hum
Russia's creak. -..-. !
The West German ' workman
is free and well fed. Russia's
workmen are little more than
slaves.
New Weapons
Germany's army will be com
pletely new. Every weapon- in it
will be modern. Most of its men
wflL be volunteers. It will have
the pride and tradition of the
most warlike nation in Europe. ;
Industrially, .West Germany is
booming. It is one of the most
prosperous ' ' countries . in . the
world. Its great factory, steel
and, coal areas were ruined by
allied bombs during World War
II. But it has made a remarkable
c.omeback. '
