Discusses Advertising ; :'y
At the session yesterday, Tom
Shepard, manager of the Big Y
Super market, spoke informally
on the market's operation and
use of promotional advertising
in moving merchandise, ;: -.
He- told those present that "in
any promotion the firm has to
be prepared to ? spend some
money to make some.". He said
that the market attempts to in
crease its average sales by such
promotional ideas as toys, nylon
stockings, etc.,; which .are usual
ly available at lower prices with
purchases of set amounts of other
items. He added that ' he ex
pected to see the field of . chil
dren's items promotion to in
crease in the future.
In comparing Medford to Eu
gene, he said that ; promotional
advertising works better locally
than at Eugene, with each com
munity accepting different
things. , v vr.
He explained that super mar
kets operate on a volume basis
with a small gross profit margin.
The use of such promotion is
necessary to get the additional
traffic necessary 'to make the
operation successful. -! . -
About 20 persons attended the
meeting, at which Vic Milnes
acted as informal chairman.
