Round 1868 Papal Stamp
Found to Have Low Value
The picture was that of a Pope,
but obviously not of the reign
ing Pontiff.
The serene features shown in
the s teel engraving that had been
only slightly discolored with the
passing years were those of Pope
Pius IX, the first to become
known as the "Prisoner of the
Vatican."
I tried to read the faded print
below the picture but could only
make out the date 1868. Along
side the printing was an in-"
scription in an Italian hand so
fine I couldn't read it. I noticed
beside it a small frame contain
ing a letter and a couple of en
velopes. The writing on these, too, I
couldn't read, except for the ad
dress to a Signor Giovanni d
. Accampo. . .
The stamps on the envelopes
were Identical, except that one
had been cancelled and the other
hadn't.
The stamp was round, like so
many put out by the Papal States
'HUCKLEBERRY FINN' FIRST
It was a good clean copy,
bqund in .green cloth, of "The
AHventures of Huckleberry
Finn."
But it wasn't satisfactory to
the rather languid, evidently
well off fellow who had asked to
see a first' edition of Mark
Twain's celebrated work.
"You really don't consider
this a first edition, do you?" he
asked.
The clerk replied that it was.
v "The test," he said, "is the
use of was instead of saw in
line 23 of page 57. If it has that,
and the book is dated New York
1885, it is a first edition de
spite the various other marks
that indicate different states of
the first edition."
"Quite so," said the customer
without bothering to look at
page 57 held open before him.

Up to the appearance of the
iron plant stand, the auction had
been a spiritless affair,
t But the plant stand aroused
them as surely as an electric
shock.
. '.'We don't know who made
this," said the auctioneer, "but
it came from one of the oldest
houses on -the Cape where for
years it held its quota of plants."
The piece consisted of an iron
rod which was held in a socket
device supported by a tripod.
One third the way up the rod
was a tier of ten holders with an
overall diameter to it of nearly a
yard. Halfway above that was
another tier qf somewhat under

While I was looking at them,
Rinaldo, my friend, entered the
room quietly..
"I've often wondered about
those stamps," he said. "Have
you any idea of what they're
worth?"
Because of an especial infer est
of long standing . in the Papal
States I was able to tell him.
"Both stamps fortunately
lack a period after the num
eral 20," I said. "That means
the unused one is worth around
$50 and the used about $1.75.'
"That's, not much," Rinaldo
replied, "but just the same, it's
a. shame my grandfather didn't
send more letters home on his
first visit to Romagna back in
1868."

first American edition and not
the first edition, which was pub
lished in London in 1884, and
that, of course, is the only one
I'm interested in.
"After all, if the British were
smart enough to beat the Amer
icans in publishing the greatest
American humorist's funniest
book, I don't see why I should
be content with a copy that
isn't theirs.
The clerk excused "himself
briefly. . I saw him consult a
Twain bibliography as a check
on his customer's overbearing
statements. Then he phoned an
other store. After a brief con
versation he was back.
"I can get you a sound copy
of the English first edition in
a few minutes," he said, "and
for only $35."
"Get it," the customer replied.
