of peculiar terms to describe
various jobs, and these frequent
ly throw the office for a loss.
For example, a placement ex
pert might pick up the phone
and hear a voice asking for a
slubber-doffer right away.
"A what?" the expert asks.
"A slubber-doffer. And while
you're at it, you might send
along a pay cheater."
Thomas Mersandante, the em
ployment security manager, has
kept abreast of 'most of indus
try's colloquialisms, but some
times even he draws a blank.
Interpretation
Employers report openings for
screen apes, nose crimpers, pic
kling and passivating men, bat
boys, knockout men, back-breakers,
crumb packers, snow men
and raisin washers. What do
they men? 1 .
Well, according to Mersan
dante, a screen ape shakes water
from particles of raw synthetic
rubber on mechanically agitated
machines.
A nose crimper places con
tainers over the ends of metal
aircraft lights. A pickling and
passivating man coats metal

State Sticks by Convicts
Accused of Setting Fire

California state board of
control has finally decided to
pay half the cost of putting out
a fire in the Los Angeles Na
tional Forest. , '
The federal government had
billed the state for the entire
cost, claiming the fire was start
ed by state convicts, but the
state department, of connections
wouldn't have any part of the
charge. The federal government
said the convicts started the fire
while distilling liquor at a state
prison forestry camp.
