traz, the government's maximum
security prison cut off from the
world by the waters of San Fran
cisco Bay, has a new warden.
The Justice department has
announced that Paul J. Madigan,
now warden at the federal me
dium "custody prison ' at Terre
Haute, Ind., has been appointed
to succeed Edwin B. Swope, who
is retiring Jan. 21 after serving
on "The Rock" since 1948.5
Madigan, a federal prison of
ficial for 22 years, has spent 11
of them in previous duty at Al
catraz. He served on the island
from 1934 to 1941 working up
to captain of the guard. He came
