TERPIN HYDRATE FOR COUGH

cough and the family doctor
prescribed terpin hydrate with
c o d i e n e. In
your column
you said ter

tell me how
harmful it is
and what to do about it. (Mrs.

It is not harmful under your
physician's car. Codeine is an
alkaloid of opium; morphine is
another. The drug is a weaker
narcotic than morphine, with
less power to relieve pain or
suppress cough.
The codeine habit is not so
hard to break as the morphine
habit not much worse than the
barbiturate habit.
I warned against taking any
preparation of terpin hydrate
containing codeine for two rea
sons. ' '
First, because it is unwise, if
not dangerous, to take any nar
cotic or sedative which tends to
suppress or check coughing,
when you are developing or in
the early stage of CRI. (If you
don't know what CRI means, I
explain in ten or twelve thous
and words, not all four-letter
words, in Little Lesson No. 5,
Call it CRI. for which, send 25c
and stamped, self -addressed en
velope. The lesson deals with
the prevention of the acute re
spiratory infections but also con
tains practicable one-horse-and-buggy
advice about winter
cough, chronic bronchitis, env
physema, bronchiectasis and
other wheezes.)

Wells, Multnomah county Repub
lican and one of the oldest mem
bers of the Oregon House of Rep
resentatives, has sent his resig
nation to the registrar of elec
tions, according to reports reach
ing Phil Englehart, Multnomah
county GOP chairman.
The '75-year-old Portland busi
nessman was not available for
comment. Mrs. Wells said her hus
band had not been feeling well
and that members of his family
had been urging him to retire
from politics.
Wells served his first term in
the Legislature in 1921. He is
president of the Harvey Wells
Reed Insurance company and
head of Jantzen Beach Park.

lungs) against the various terpin
hydrate preparations that con
tain codeine.
As I explain in the CRI book
let a good coughing spell first
thing every morning is not only
desirable but should be helped
and encouraged by assumption
of the upside down posture by
the patient with chronic bron
chial trouble. The secretion or
expectoration which accumu
lates in the bronchial passages
over night should be expelled by
coughing or drained by gravity,
not . pent up by suppressing
cough. .
Terpin hydrate is a derivative
of turpentine. Purified oil of tur
pentine (not crude turpentine
spirits intended for industrial
use) may be taken in doses of
one or too drops on a little
sugar or in a capsule twice a
day. Or the derivative, terpin
hydrate, two grains in capsule
twice daily, after food, for six
weeks twice in the year.
I mention this here because
my own experience in practice
and reports of many readers
with winter cough convince me
that it may do good and in any
case it will do no harm. God
knows I have enough to repent
