Portland (U.R) According
to an annual estimate of the
state board of health, the pop
ulation of Portland has topped
the 400,000 mark for the first
time in the citys history, a gain
of more than 25,000 since the
1950 census.
The board's vital statistics
section reached the figure by a
complicated formula using resi
dent births and deaths and esti
mated migration in and out of
the area. Figures reached the
same way were less than two
per cent off the official 1950
census count.
The board estimated the total
of Portland and Multnomah
county combined at 514,010 as
of July. Population of the en
tire state was estimated to be
1,662,680, a gain of 141,339 since
1950.

After Auto Accident
Salem, Ore. (U.R) A boy,
whose birth in a moving car,
caused a collision, died Friday
night in a Salem hospital about
14 hours after his unexpected
birth.
The baby, son of Mf. and Mrs.
Don H. Berryhill of Salem, was
taken to the hospital in poor
condition. It was reported to ba
two months premature. Berry
hill was rushing his wife to the
hospital when his wife, in the
front seat beside him, exclaimed:
"the baby's here."
Berryhill said he turned te
lool and his car collided vith
another. The mother was taken
to one hospital for treatment ett
a broken rib, and the baby was
rushed to another hospital. Trie
Berryhills have two other chil
dren. The father is a foreman at
the Salem branch eof the Cal
ifornia Packing Corp.
