Social Security
Office Staff Up
" Three additions to the staff of
the Medford social security of
fice were announced Friday by
W. V. Nusbaum, manager.
Included are two claims repre
sentatives and a stenographer.
Two additions will bring the of

fice's staff to eight persons,
Nusbaum added.
William W. Browne, formerly
of Eugene, was the first to ar
rive. He is a claims representa
tive. Ee has taken up residence
at Cargill ct. Browne formerly
was a teacher in the seventh -and
eighth grades at Fall Creeknear
Eugene. .
He spent over five years in
Sine U. S. Air Force and attended
the University of Oregon. His
father, a retired Navy com
mander, and mother, living at
Coral Gables, Fla.
On Monday, Mrs. Elva Mae
Gardner, Medford, will begin
york as a stenographer. About a
. .9 .week later, Floyd B. Cummins,
Portland, will report as a claims
representative. He is a former
Federal Reserve bank employee.
Nusbaum said that the staff
additions are due primarily to
the increase in work necessary
under the amended Social Se-
curity act, and also to the in
creased growth in the Medford
. area.
Ordinances Passed
By Ciiy Council
m Bedford's city council, in a
year's end session Friday noon,
approved the December payroll
and adopted several ordinances.
One officially adopted the
city manager form of govern
ment effective Jan. 1. Others in-
volved sale, for and removal
within 90 days, of three build
ings on airport property. Buyers
were Kenneth B. Fowler, $517
for old Biddle residence; Walter
Armpriest, $275 for an adjacent
barn and Seth L. Waters, $100
for a spray shed.
Members of the council's land,
building and light committee
reported that no action has been
taken as yet on sale of city
owned Camp White property to
Fir-Ply, Inc., although negotia
tions are still under way.
A $5,000 performance bond
was adopted by the council for
the new city manager position.
Freak Mishap Halts
Suez Canal traffic
Port Said, Egypt (U.R) A
freak accident blocked the Suez
Canal Friday and authorities
said the vital link between Eu
rope and Asia would be closed
for at least four days.
The accident occurred at 3
a.m. when the second ship in a
nine-ship convoy en route be
tween Suez and Port Said struck
a military bridge across the canal
and then ran aground on the
sand banks.
The bridge collapsed across
the ship, pinning it to the bot
tom of the channel.

carrying oil to Europe from the
Persian Gulf.
