TOO MUCH HEART TR OUBLE IN THE HEAD
In reference to pain or dis
tress wrongly attributed to the
heart and disturbances of heart
function Dr. J.
A. Oille, Ca
nadian intern
ist, said: "Al
most 60 per
c e n t of pa
tients who con
sult a cardiac
specialist are
suffering eith
er from an ex
aggerated or
Dr. Brady wholly un
necessary anxiety about their
hearts, arising from suggestion
and not based on reason . . .
Most of the suggestions arise
from careless or ill-considered
remarks by doctors."
Out of 631 persons referred
to the Work 'Classification Unit
in New York because of em
ployment difficulties attributed
to heart disease, 175 were found
to have no heart disease at all
Weak heart is popular' with
neurotics, responsibility and
work evaders, chiselers, draft
dodgers and free loaders. When
the doctor acquiesces in such a
phony diagnosis it is not because
he is willing to contribute to
fraud or deception but because
he lacks the skill to determine
or measure the efficiency of the
heart. Every heart is weaker or
stronger than another heart, but
an. unqualified .diagnosis of
"weak; Eeatf'is- as revealing as it
would' be to say "All I know is
what the patient tells me."
If the trouble is just weak
heart the cure is simple and cer
tain graduated exercise, that is
gradually increasing daily stints
of exercise, play or work over

board.
In Little Lesson No. 2,C V D,
about heart and artery troubles,
I recommend a real heart tonic
for any weak heart, that is to
say a remedy which restores en
feebled function and promotes
vigor and a sense of well being.
If this seems inconsistent, so
long, it has been pleasant talk
ing to you. On the other hand,
if you study Little Lesson No. 2
carefully you will understand
that I am as consistent as you
could really expect a doctor to
be. I particularly recommend
that any poor soul who thinks
he or she must have a daily dose
of digitalis to keep the heart
working use my heart tonic as a
vehicle for the medicine . and
then after a week or two, begin

decreasing the dairy dose of digi
talis but keep on taking the
tonic for a year, and I'll guaran
tee, no, , an honest doctor can
never guarantee anything I
earnestly assure you that by the
time you take the last dose of
digitalis (within two or three
weeks) your heart will be work
ing so well and you'll be in such
fine fettle that you'll wonder
why that old fogy doctor ever
planted in your alleged mind
the morbid suggestion that you'd
have to take digitalis as long as
you live.
For a copy of the CVD book
let send 25c and stamped, self-
addressed envelope, la it I say
this about digitalis:
"Most good physicians still
believe' it is of value in the
treatment of heart disease (de-.
compensation, dilation, con
gestive stage) and they seem
pretty confident in the ration
ale of its use. But I would' take ;
iWbnly if my doctor ordered
me to take it or else. I don't
know how long I'd be willing
to take it, but I'd take it or
else--fire the doctor."
This, , I . hope, .will stop any
reader who tries to heckle his
doctor when or if the doctor pre
scribes digitalis.
