Columbia Accident
In Which Six Died
State's 1954 Worst
Salem (U.R) A Columbia
county accident in which six
-persons were killed and 13 oth
ers were injured has been listed
by Secretary of State Earl T.
Newbry as the worst in Oregon
this year. The accident occurred
early this month. .
, Accidents and injuries still
were lower than, those of 1953,
but after a series of multiple
death accidents, the death toll
this year already was at least
401, compared to 391 deaths re
corded in 1953. .
There were five accidents in
each of which four persons were
killed. '

the Scio-Jefferson road in Linn
county when a car failed to ne
gotiate a curve, skidded off the
roadway and overturned.
Four more were killed in Des
chutes county in March. The
Traffic Safety Division said the
crash was caused by a driver
who was weaving along the
highway. An oncoming car
swerved to the left in an unsuc
cessful attempt to avoid the
crash. Four others were injured.
Two four-death mishaps oc
curred in November. One was in
Linn county when a carload of
teen-agers ' failed to stop for a
stop sign and struck a truck. In
Malteur county a car skidded on
ice during the Thanksgiving
holiday and four persons bound
for a family reunion were killed.
Plunges Down Embankment
This month during the Christ
mas holiday a car plunged off an
icy highway down a 900-foot em
bankment in the Hart mountain
area of southeast Oregon and
four persons were killed. .
Eight accidents, in - each of
which three persons were killed,
added 24 to the record of high
way accident deaths in Oregon.
Two each were killed in 25
accidents.
Boys Grow Longer,
Scientist Discovers
. Portland (U.R) Boys and
girls both start their rapid per
iod of growth about the same
time but girls stop growing soon
er, according to a University of
Oregon medical school scientist.
Dr. Edwin Osgood, head of
the division of . experimental
medicine, said boys and girls
start their most rapid period of
growth at about IVi years. Girls
show an abrupt slowing of the
growth process at ages 14 to 17
while boys continue growing un
til 16 to 20 years, he said.
Dr. Osgood said it had .pre
viously been thought that boys
grew faster than girls. He re
ported his findings yesterday be
fore the American Association
for the Advancement of .Science
meeting at Berkeley, Calif.

Lost Pilot 'Talked In'
During Snow Storm
Spikane . (U.R) . A pilot
flying here from Klamath Falls,
Ore., got lost in a snowstorm
near his destination yesterday
but was "talked in" . to a safe
landing at Geiger field.
The pilot was identified as A.
F. Lawton, who . left Klamath
Falls about 10:50 a.m. in a four
place Beechcraft plane.
The Civil Aeronautics admin
istration here said the pilot of
the plane radioed abcut . 1:40
p.m. for landing instructions and
was placed on a landing pattern
for Felts field on the eastern
edge of the city, v
A few minutes later, the pi
lot again radioed to report that
he apparently was lost and could
see only a grain elevator in the
snow. The CAA found that he
was over. Cheney, about 15 miles
southwest of Geiger, then took
down through the snowstorm un
til the pilot could see the run
way only before the wheels
of his plane touched the ground.

bury the hatchet with the capi
talists. The Dodgers didn't win
the series. But don't let anyone
tell you 1954 was a ho-hum year.
- It was a fantastic year. Man
kind, in a quiet sort of way,
went off its rocker.
It was a year in which a piano
player named Liberace got six
votes for sheriff in Mesa County,
Colo.
It was a year in which a farm
er in Portugal said the object he
saw in the sky was not a flying
saucer but a cup.
The Wrong House
False notes abounded in the
music of the . spheres. - Profes
sional wreckers at Thorold, Ont.,
ripped the roof off a house, re
moved the doors and windows
and were chipping at the plaster
when they discovered they were
wrecking the wrong house. -

stabbed a woman at Great Yar
mouth, England, and then apolo
gized. He had mistaken her for
his wife.

tures after signing ; ' a - contract
calling for two . more pictures
with the firm.
Exact, details of the contract
were not disclosed but studio' of
ficials said negotiations were
completed last night in Reno,
where the red-haired actress,
her crooner husband, Dick
Haymes and her two children
have been living.
The new; contract, believed to
be worth more than one million
dollars for two future pictures
starring Miss Hayworth, also
dissolved the Beckworth Film
Co.', which formerly" made Hay
worth pictures for Columbia.
