the mail to overseas military

WHY BABIES DON'T HAVE COLIC
When it comes to the welfare
and happiness of babies I tell the
truth and nothing but the truth
and I'm sorry
if some of you
readers choose
to be i n d i g
ant about it.
The truth I
have to tell to
day is that a
baby who is
well loved and
well cared for
doesn't have
Dr. Brady the colic.
Maybe I should get ready for
a quick get-away and express it
more emphatically, thus: 999 out
of 1000 babies given medicine or
treatment for colic have no colic
unless or until the medicine or
treatment gives them colic.
From the" first time I opened
a book on pediatrics I have been
unsatisfied with the concept of
infantile, colic. In nearly two
years' internship in a hospital
where there were always 30 to
40 young, infants, left by unwed
I mothers, I saw no colic but
tnese babies had better care
than the babies . of most ligiti
mate parents receive. In private
practice in country and city I
saw a few cases of alleged colic,
but in every instance the baby's
discomfort was due to mistreat
ment, I believed, and in many of
these cases, if the people didn't
believe they, being older, knew
more than I, being pretty young,
did, I proved it, at least to my
own satisfaction, by interdicting
further dosing with castor oil,
peppermint, paregoric, and fur
ther use of enemas, and seeing
that the baby received adequate
food and not "easy to digest"
pap calculated to produce mal
nutrition.
This sounds simple, but -it was
not so simple as it sounds. In
fact in too many instances the
family called a better doctor to
attend the baby.
Fight Pressed for
Battleship 'Funeral'
Portland U.R) Harry E
Williams, chairman of the Bat
tleship Oregon commission,
plans to carry his fight for a
"funeral" for the battleship's
hulk directly to the Navy de
partment. Williams will leave here Fri
day for Washington, D.C., to
confer with the Secretary of the
Navy.
He said he would "take two
weeks if I have to" to obtain a
military funeral with full hon
ors for the ship. The .hull is now
gathering barnacles at Guam
where it was towed during
World War II for a breakwater.
The Navy has said the state of
Oregon could have the ship if it
would tow it back to the states
and recondition it. But the cost
would total $3,500,000. Williams
said that was prohibitive.
DANGEROUS READING
Fresno, Calif . U.R) A little
learning, in the case of Henry
J. Poe of Fresno, proved to be a
dangerpus thing. Poe, now serv
ing a term in San Quentin state
prison for safecracking, said
that before 'pulling off the last
few jobs," he spent several
hours in a library studying how
to use explosives.

The mainstay in the diagnosis
of colic seems to be the way the
baby cries to beat the band,
draws up his legs, straightens
out, has a hard swollen belly,
clenches his fists, gets red ih the
face, then pale why ma'am,
that's enough to 'convince any
fishwife but I have observed
all of these symptoms in perfect
ly healthy babies, including my
own, and in my judgment such
little temper spells or whatever
you please to call 'em are good
for a baby. A normal baby will
give just such a performance if
he is made uncomfortable by a
wet didy, too much noise, prick
ly heat, the glare of bright
lights, tobacco smoke in the air,
hunger, an overload of dilute
food, want of his afternoon bath
(4:30 p.m.), back rub, a few
minutes of play on the blanket
before the fire, an application of
talcum powder, a fresh clean
nighty and so to bed and supper.
An infant will cry long and
hard from any of these causes
until so exhausted that he be
comes weak, blue and cold.
From this fact many an ignora
mus has inferred that cold or
chilling causes colic. Application
of dry or moist heat relieves var
ious aches and pains, including
bellyache, but if it relieved
"colic" people would not so
readily dope their unloved in
fants with paregoric (campho
rated tincture of opium), would
they?
