Cause of Tantrums
One of the most common fal

love and affection . from my
husband and me. But my son
goes into a tantrum if I ask
him a question sometimes or
fell him that he shouldn't do
things. He jumps up and down,
then sits on the floor, screams
and kicks his feet. We don't
know what to do. Everyone'
says he will outgrow it, but
still we worry.. What is your
opinion?" V
(A) I agree with your friends,
but within limits. Your son will
"outgrow" his tantrums. He will
stop jumping up and down and
scream mg.
When he is old
enough to go
to school he
will discover
that other chil
dren think
such behavior
is "babyish"
and will make
J fun of him.
That. how.
ur. nuiiocjc ever, is as far
as my agreement with vour
friend's opinion goes. Just be
cause your son stops his baby
ish tantrums will not mean that
he has outgrown'his angers and
resentments. ,
Instead, he will exnress them
in a more grown-up way; He will
sulk, be- grouchy or sarcastic
and make himself generally dis
agreeable. His tantrums will
simply have to take another
form.
Find out why he gets so an
gry; then try to correct the
cause. Since he is the oldest of
your children, he may resent be
ing treated like the younger
ones, fiive him more resnonsi-
hilities and nrivileees. and treat
him as the oldest child. See if
this does not do the trick.

French nation,
that supports
one bar for
every 68 men,
Dr. Brady children,
half a liter of wine daily to
every soldier; spends 10 of its
income on liquor. But when
Mendes - France attended the
Radical-Socialist Party congress
and chose to drink milk, urging
all the delegates to do the same,
the well oiled delegates just
roared and laughed.
Some one purporting to have
inside information said the late
Joe S. could drink round after
round of vodka until visiting ne
gotiators were scarcely aware of
what they were doing, yet Joe
kept his wits and got the con
cessions he wanted, for Joe's
"vodka" was pure water.
Newspaper correspondents in
Washington believe people in
Washington do more drinking
than people anywhere else in the
country. Not just the adminis
trators and government officials
generally but also the people are
in Washington seeking special
favors, contracts or payment for
political services rendered. All
these matters are expedited by
the free flow of alcohol.
The late great William Jen
nings Bryan, for whom I voted,
although my father begged me
to keep it secret, for if the pub
lic became aware of my defec-n
tion it might ruin my career,
didn't get roars of laughter.
Bryan's advocacy of grape juice
or other non-alcoholic beverage
for formal toasts and social
drinking brought the man ridi
cule and , invective, uttered by
wine-bibbers under the influ
ence or by professionals in the
pay of the wine or liquor inter
ests.
. Not that I'd vote for a man
merely because he's an abstainer,
although I admire any man in
public life who knows alcohol
never does anyone any good, and
has sufficient self-respect to de
cline, more or less politely ac
cording to the situation, to take
a drink in any circumstance, and
enough concern for the welfare
of the country and the happiness
of the people to advocate tee
totalism. New Years office parties are
