Spoils Gilt-Giving
Many people, it is true, give
gifts with the idea that they
will be "paid back." A bride-to-be
writes: -
(Q) "I am io be married is
the near future. 1 My father
and I both feel that a wedding
reception is an unnecessary
expense, and we would prefer
not to . have one. Bui my
mother would like io have a
small reception at the house
after the wedding io which a
few dozen relatives, friends
and neighbors have been in
vited. She wants the reception
for only one reason gifts.

On the other hand, I heartily
agree with the stand you have

er invited people with the idea
that - they would send you "a
wedding gift in payment for the
food they were to be served, .
If people are friends of the
family,- they would likely send
you a gift even if you did not
have a reception, just as your
relatives would. ft. is true that
people often send bigger and
more expensive gifts if they at
tend a wedding reception than
if they only go to! the church
ceremony.
But, that should be an unim
portant consideration in making
your plans. Try to make your
mother see that her emphasis on
gifts is spoiling what should be
one of the happiest days of your
life and emphasize that you
want people to come to see you
being married so they can share
your joy, -not so they will feel
obligated to send you a gift.

never enough hospital beds avail
able for the sick is that so many
hospital beds
are occupied
by interlopers
such as indi
viduals .who
enter the hos
pital just for a
rest or maybe
to have what
some call
"check-up" or
for "observa-

it is so much more impressive
when the doctor studies or ex
amines the patient . in hospital
with interns, nurses and other
characters in the act than the
study or examination would be
in the patient's home or in the
doctor's office.
And if there is anything that
impresses the Yankee Wiseacre
it is just that kind of show. It is
more or less standard in the
movies, notably in the imposing
scenes televised by Medic.
A large group of interlopers
in hospital beds are normal,
healthv voune women who
imagine it is safer to go to the
hospital to have a baby. It isn t.
Home is the safest place to have
a baby. There are no statistics
prove whether home or hospital
delivery is the safer, but from
what I have seen of both, as
intern, as private practitioneer
in country and in city, and as
attending physician on a hos
pital staff, I am convinced that
home is the safest place to have
a baby.
Indeed, I could make a good
case for home delivery by quot
ing reports of experiences of
young women who have been
delivered in hospital.
Hospital delivery is not so bad
if the institution is out of the
ninteenth century, that is, if
natural childbirth or rooming-
in has been adoped.
. Mrs. C. B. W. writes:
. I have three children, two
born at home, that I nursed; one,
born in hospital, that I could not
nurse. I began nursing the first
two within two or three hours
after they were born. But in the
hospital they bring your baby
in only 24 hours after delivery,

governing the behavior of poor
geeks who haven't homes fit to

age the young mother from even

figure.

ing comic books.
Every day except Sunday an
offcer is detailed to visit the
warehouse of the Holyoke News
Co. to check on incoming comic
books, pocket books and ether
literature available to teen
agers. If the books do not meet
the approval of the officer, they
are not sent to local newsdeal
ers. The censorship started Aug. 9
with the full approval and co
operation of the News com
pany's officials in an effort to
find a way of halting distribu
tion of crime and horror.
