Natural toot Mow Prevails
Among New York Debutantes
By ELIZABETH TOOMEY
Uniled Press Correspondent
New York (U.R) The aver
age debutante now is a girl who
does her own hair, likes the nat
ural look of unplucked eyebrows
and pink lipstick and scrubs her
face regularly with soap and
water.
Doesn't sound much like a
spoiled darling with expensive
tastes and a tendency to dance
nightly till dawn, does it?
The new look debutante, usu
ally a college freshman who is
more concerned with sociology
than the social register, has
changed considerably since
mamma's day.
She doesn't expect an extrav
agant debut party and she likes
to do things for herself.

a typical modern debutante does
to make herself look pretty.
She not only prefers to set her
own hair, the survey revealed,
but the average debutante is old
fashioned about her hairdo. She
prefers a long, soft bob, much
like the one worn by glamour
deb Brenda Frazier 14 years ago,
to the fashionably short hair cut.
. The girls got together for
lunch recently and filled out
long questionnaires about their
beauty habits. The cotillion is
sponsored by Jacqueline Coch

owns her own cosmetics com
pany. Charily Benefits
Part of the new look to debuts
these days is getting together
with other socially-eligible teen
agers and making a debut in a
big party sponsored by a busi
ness concern. Guests buy tickets
to attend, but expenses are paid
by the sponsor so that all the
proceeds may go to charity. The
cotillion benefits the New York
Infirmary.
The money it costs a father to
give his daughter this kind of a
debut wouldn't have paid the
flower bill at a coming out party

Several of the members had

these were especially attractive.
- Miss Mary Ellen Bell was the
guest of the evening and talk
ed about her trip in Europe pri
marily emphasizing the deplor
able conditions in Spain. The
speaker remarked that it had
been just exactly a year ago
when she arrived in Spain and
soon discovered she was prac

conditions of the middle ages
still exist. Miss Bell. made her
audience realize how much the
people of this nation have to be
thankful for, .particularly the
comfort of heating systems in
the cold weather. Christmas in
Spain as she observed it lacked
the feeling of joy and goodwill
such as. we have but instead it
was rather a roWdy celebration.
