. "Tokyo U.R) Hisato Ichima-
da, Finance Minister in the new
Japanese cabinet, said today the
government will follow a pro
gram designed to combat infla
tion and strengthen friendship
with the United States. - ;
In an exclusive interview with
the United Press, the 61-year-old
Finance Minister, said the most
important economic problem fa
cing Japan today is the problem
of "deflation" and he intends to
continue the deflationary pro
gram of the previous regime.
Tougher Atiilude
He indicated, however, that" a
"tougher attitude" would be
taken by the government and it
would "set examples" of auster
ity for the rest of the nation to
follow.
"I have no intention of chang
ing our deflationary policy,"
Ichimada said. "That is our pol
icyand we will follow it although
we may have to adjust from time
to time to meet developing sit
uations. He said there absolutely were
no plans to change the Japanese
Yen exchange rate.
-Ichimada, who served for six
years as governor of the Bank
of Japan and is highly respected
by foreign economic experts, in
dicated that one of his reasons
for accepting the cabinet post
was to msuregood relations with
the United States. " ' ;
"One of the most important
points m my policy is to have
good U.S.-Japanese ; relations,
he said. "This must never
change.. This is very important."
Ichimada said Japan would
welcome foreign investments
depending on what they are for
and whether or not they are
needed "here." .
He expressed hope that Japan
could ' get. a government loan
from the United States or from
the World Bank and endorsed
the proposed -. American-European
foreign aid development
program, for Asia. .
