For Committees
Portland (U.R) Chairmen of
the state house and senate ways
and means and taxation commit
tee, the two most influential
committees of both bodies, were
announced at a meeting here
Saturday.
Elmo Smith, John Day pub
lisher who will become president
of the next session of the Oregon
senate, named Howard Belton,
former senate - president, as
chairman of the senate ways and
-means committee. Rudie Wil-
helm Jr., 1953 house speaker,
was named chairman of the sen
ate taxation committee.
Henry Semon, Klamath Falls
Democrat, was named chairman
of the house ways and means
committee by Ed Geary, Klam
ath Falls, who is slated to be
speaker of the house. Loran
Stewart, Lane county Republi
can, will head the house taxation
committee.
Smith and Geary announced
the appointments following a
meeting with the new committee
heads.

Court Action Eyed
For Eugene Racing
Eugene, Ore. , U.R) Sidney
Milligan, attorney for a business
firm seeking to establish a dog
racing plant at Eugene, said to
day he planned to file a court
action testing the state racing
commission's right to reject the
application of Greyhound Park,
Inc.
The commission meeting in
Portland Saturday turned down
the application to build and op
erate a $320,000 track six miles
north of Eugene.
Milligan said the commission
is required by state law to grant
such a permit to any group com
plying with legal requirements.
Ed Cone, Lane county repre
sentative in the next session of
the state legislature, said he
would sponsor legislation per
mitting local option elections to
settle such controversies as that
which has centered around Lane
county dog racing in the past
several months.

Yeggs foiled by Lack of

said today failure to provide
proper transportation ruined the
efforts of thieves who tried to
steal a safe from the Italia
Theater.
The thieves used a baby car
riage to haul the 300-pound safe
away but the carriage broke
down a few feet from a side
door of the theater.

Names New Officers
Jacksonville Warren .lodge
chapter, AF and AM, soon will
have been chartered for -100
years and members of the group
Wednesday evening elected of
ficers who will serve for the
101st year of the organization.
The chapter was instituted in
March, 1955 and plans are being
made now to celebrate the event.
The festivities are scheduled for
May 14. .

Deputy Sheriff Albert Fuller

indicted by grand jury at Phe
nix City, Ala., for murder of
State Atty. Gen.-elect A. L.
Patterson. Patterson, avowed
vice foe, was. shot to death
after winning, election.
City Firemen Answer
Two Alarms Sunday
A blaze at the home of M. O.
Gwinn, 429 Fairmount st., yes
terday, was confined to the
floor 'and one wall, firemen re
ported. v -
They said that a board behind
a hot water heater ignited caus
ing the blaze. Two, pumper
trucks were sent to the scene
about 4:15 p.m.
Firemen were sent to the Ted
Christeson residence, 324 Mary
St., about 9:45 a.m. yesterday for
a smoke investigation. They said
that furnace back blast caused
the smoke.
Man Easily Replaces
Bundle Taken in Holdup

Two bandits were waiting for
John Cirnigliaro when he closed
up his supermarket and emerged
carrying a large package.
As Cirnigliaro approached his
auto in a parking lot the two
young men ordered him to "hand
over the bundle." Cirnigliaro
obeyed and the men fled.
On the way home Cirnigliaro
picked up another two quarts of
ice cream to replace the two
taken by the bandits.

Hobby club met December 7 at
the country home of Mrs. Walter
Shock, with a. covered dish
luncheon. Members present were
Mrs. Harry Condray, Mrs.
Charles Babcock, Mrs. Sam
Bunch of Cave Junction,- Mrs.
Frank Stamm, Mrs. Hayden Wil
liams, Mrs. James Whipple and
the hostess'. Exchange of Hobby
gifts was enjoyed.
Twenty people, 60 years old
or older, met at the Fellowship
hall December 8 with a covered
dish dinner and entertainment
by the Junior Choir singing
Christmas carols and Mrs. Ford
with several solos. ; . j
Then the Seafarers club was
organized. Officers elected were:
president, Mrs. Lois Morgan;
Mrs. Fannie Walker, vice-president;
Mrs. James Whipple, sec
retary, and Clarence Stiehl,
treasurer. Program committee
is Mrs. A. E. Miller, David
Dobbie and D. F. Barrnett. The
next meeting will be in March.
All residents of Rogue River
and vicinity are welcome to come
and enjoy the meetings. ' '
Mrs. Zorah Wiley spent Mon
day visiting her sister and hus
band, Mr. and Mrs. James Whip
ple. Mrs. Wiley recently re
turned from McCloud, Calif.,
where she spent several weeks
visiting her -son and daughter-in-law,
the Clinton Wileys. ;
The Nativity scene has been
returned to the lot on Main st.

and on Friday night a commun
ity sing was held with the Rev.
Ray Prinzing of the Assembly
of God church in charge. Mrs.
Ray Powell accompanied the
group on her accordian. -
Mrs. Mae Shults left last
Saturday for Keno, where she
will spend Christmas with her
daughter, Mrs. R. C Cummings,
and family.
John B. Leyen has been ap
pointed temporary local mail
messenger for the delivery of
mail to and from the post office
to the train. He replaced Mrs.
Juamta Scott who has served
in that capacity for a long time.
Members of the Rogue -River
Boosters club will meet Tuesday
night to hear committee reports
and lay plans for the. 1955 roost
er crowing contest. - - '
Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Laws
celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary December 11 with
an open house. Mr. and Mrs.
Laws have lived in Rogue River
most of this time. . .
Rogue River has another new
store. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Codr
have opened a radio and tele
vision, shop on Main street next
to the barber shop.. : ,
Mr. and Mrs. L A. Miller and
son Russell were dinner guests

paid a record $90,551,000,000 in
taxes to the government during
fiscal 1954, despite cuts in fed
eral taxes, it was announced to
day. .:. . :
Stiff increases in state and
local, taxes sent the total take to
a new high, the tax foundation
explained in its "facts and fig
ures on government finance."
Lopking ahead, the foundation
said "the full effect of recent
federal tax cuts in fiscal 1955
may reverse the upward trend
of total tax receipts for its first
time since 1949."
"The average American will
pay $42.18 as his share of the
interest on the federal debt in
fiscal 1955," the study stated.
29 Mexicans Killed
In Train-Bus Crash

Twenty-nine persons were killed
lae Saturday night when a train
struck a bus on a highway south
of Tierra Blanca. Seven other j
persons were reported in grave
condition.
The bus was destroyed by fire
after the collision which oc
curred at an unguarded railway
crossing. '
