stroyed the 200-foot long one-
story plant of the Northwest
Copper works in Portland Sat
urday.
Twenty-four pieces of fire
equipment, including three fire
boats, answered the three
alarms.
Clouds of smoke drifted across
the Willamette river, attracting
hundreds of spectators.
Nearly all of the roof of the
big plant collapsed and one wall
caved in. No one was reported
hurt.
The plant closed on Saturdays
but a worker at the Albina En
gine and Machine works nearby
spotted the blaze and turned in
the first alarm.
The plant owner, L. R. (Pick)
Hussa, said he was unable to es
timate damage to the five-year-
old plant. He said the damage,
however, was covered by Insur
ance. Hussa ' also owns jthe Al
bina Engine works. -

000," and that of "Guys and
Dolls," $6,000,000. The produc
tion of D. W. Griffith's "Birth of
. Nation" was $60,000. It grossed
over $30,000,000!
Shocked Grandpa
Pittsburgher reports that on a
recent visit to his house his two
grandchildren, aged 3 and 6, re
spectively (both girls), proudly
displayed new miniature hand
bags. In these handbags, he re
ports were miniature lipsticks,
rouge and powder puffs. He com
ments, "Isn't 3 years old a little
young for a girl to start using
lipstick or am I too old fash

er"? The Italians seem to prefer

Brooklyn Again
Once again Br6oklyn tops the
country! This time with an alter
nate birth record. Brooklynites
John and Margaret Lynch are
the parents of thirteen children
with sex alternating at each
blessed event. First a boy, then a
girl and so on up to the thir
teenth. Twelve of the Lynch chil
dren are living; six boys and six
girls. All the girls are readheads
except one, who is a blonde. All
the boys are blonds, except one
who is a redhead. An' unusual
family. Even for Brooklyn.
Pope Has Fever
From Overwork .
Vatican City (U.R) Pope Pius
XII developed a slight fever to
day from week end overwork.
'Authoritative Vatican sources
said the Pope was tired. They
said his doctors had forbidden
him to return to the desk where
he had been sitting up, working
on church papers.
These sources emphasized
there was no cause for alarm,
noting that his temperature has
been erratic ever since his col
lapse 11 days ago.
The Pope's development of a
temperature after what the Vati
can called, a "very good night"
indicated the frail pontiff is still
weak, despite his progress.
His doctors told him he must
get more rest because his illness
tends to recur when he over
exerts himself.
Bridge a! Nyssa
Opened To Traffic
Ontario, Ore. (U.R) Planking
on the temporary bridge across
the Snake river at Nyssa was in
place shortly before noon-Sunday
and the bridge was opened
to traffic Sunday afternoon.
The temporary structure re
places the Oregon-Idaho span
that collapsed December 5. Since
then three shifts have been
working around the clock under
direction of T. M. Stephenson,
assistant state bridge engineer
from Salem to restore the traffic
artery.

Senate subcommittee, headed by
Sen. Herman Welker, (R-Ida.),
held a one-day hearing today
with the aim of spotlighting the
activities of "some American
citizens who have lived in Red
China."
Welker said the principal wit
ness would be Mrs. Sylvia Pow
ell, 34, wife of John W. Powell,
' editor and lecturer who spent 15
years in China. Powell himself
cpuld not be found to be served
with a subpeona.
Other witnesses will include
the widow of an Army- lieuten
ant ho died-in a North Korean
Drisoner of War Mmn and CQT7.

battle streamers of the, three
active Marine divisions; a : 3.5
inch rocket launcher and rocket;
a water-cooled .30 caliber ma
chine gunj and other items.
The traveling exhibit is now
on a four-month tour . of the
eight western states.
