Cleveland, O. (U.R) Dr. Sam
uel H. Sheppard's direct testi
mony ended today with his ad
mitting that he had succumbed
to "human frailties" during his
life.
The testimony was an appar
ent reference to Dr. Sam's affair
with pretty Susan Hayes, 24, a
laboratory technician who has
told of sexual intimacies with
him during a 16-mohth period.
"Doctor, in your life have
you ever committed any sin?"
asked defense attorney William
J. Corrigan.
"I have succumbed to human
frailties, yes sir," the handsome
osteopath-surgeon replied.
Cross-Examined
Prosecutor John J. Mahon
then put the 30-year-old defend
ant under cross-examination.
Dr. Sheppard had testified that
a T-shirt found snagged on a
piece of wire on. a pier near his
property "certainly could" be
his.
The testimony was a defense
attempt to clear up the mystery
of the long-lost T-shirt Dr. Shep
pard was wearing on the night of
his wife's murder.
"Is it your T-shirt?" asked
Corrigan.
"It certainly could be my T
shirt I'm not sure," Dr. Shep
pard replied.
The state, attempting to send
Dr. Sam to the electric chair for
the bludgeon - murder of his
pregnant wife, Marilyn, 31, last
July 4, contends Dr. Sam's T
shirt got so blood-soaked that he
disposed of it along with the
murder weapon. .
Contradicts Officials
Before the T-shirt testimony.
Dr. Sheppard read a lecture on
medicine to the seven-man, five
weman jury in Common Please
Court. He contradicted the ex
pert medical testimony of both
the veteran county coroner, Dr.
Samuel R. Gerber, and of Dr.
Lester Adelson, the deputy coro
ner and pathologist who per
formed the autopsy on Marilyn's
body. . -
Dr. Adelson had testified that
the 15 heavy blows vhich
cracked her skull in many
places, caused her death." ;
Dr. Sheppard testified destruc
tion or partial destruction of the
frontal plate of the skull "isn't
necessarily fatal."
'We Hate Ike' Policy
Out, Butler Declares
Washington (U.R) Paul
Butler, new chairman of the
Democratic party, said last night
he doesn't advocate a '"We Hate
Ike" ' campaign but feels the
Democrats ought to criticize the
President's "mistakes and fail
ures." Sen. John J. Sparkman (D
Ala.) endorsed Butler's stand. He
said the President ought to
"share personal responsibility
for what he has done and left
undone."
Butler, appearing on the CBS
television . show, "Face of The
Nation," said the Democrats
have "great respect" for Mr.
Eisenhower and his office but
feel his mistakes are a legiti
mate target for criticism.

Editor's Note: Red China, In the
opinion of some Fat Eastern observer,;,
may try to use the United Nation de
mand for release of 11 imprisoned
American airmen as a propaganda
weapon for the Peipine Communist
regime. '
In the following dispatch Earnest
Hoberecht, United Press vice-president
for Asia, tells how such a Red strat
egy might work.
By EARNEST HOBERECHT
. United Press Correspondent '
Tokyo (U.R) Some Asian
diplomats believe United Na
tions Secretary - General Dag
Hammarskjold may have made a
tactical blunder in asking for a
conference in Peiping on the fate
of '11 U.S. airmen who have
been imprisoned as spies by the
Red China regime.
They believe" that Hammers
kjold's visit to Peiping, if made,
would play into the hands of the
Communists. .
These sources believe it may
be possible for the Red Chinese
to convince millions of Asians
that the United Nations has re
quested permission to come to
Peiping and beg for a favor.
View Held in Hong Kong
United Pres Staff Correspond
ent Wendell Merick reported
from Hong Kong today that a
similar view is held in that Brit
ish Crown colony on the Red
China frontier. Merick said the
diplomats in Hong Kong believe
that acceptance or rejection by
the Chinese of the Hammars
kjold offer to visit Peiping is of
less importance than the fact it
was made. in the first place.-
Asian diplomats stressed that
they- are sympathetic' to; any
move that will hasten the re
lease of 11 - American airmen.
But, they, said they are not sure
the Hammarskjold request to
visit Peiping was a wise move.
. They would not predict, that
the move would backfire. But
they said such a development is
a distinct possibility. ; '
Site Favors Chou
These sources said a request
for a meeting with the Reds in
Hong Kong, Hanoi, Moscow or
New Delhi would have been bet
ter. The Reds then would have
been deprived of the opportu
nity they now have to tell their
propaganda audiences that Com
munist China is so powerful that
the U.N. secretary-general must
fly half way around the world
to confer with its leaders.
It also was pointed out here
that it would be very difficult
for Hammarskjold to get really
tough with Chinese Communist
Premier and Foreign Minister
Chou En-lai in any conversations
held on Communist home terri
tory. -' - . ' ' - ' ; ' - -
Some Asian quarters feared
the Hammarskjold proposal to
fly to Peiping also, -will play into
the hands of those countries fa
voring Red. China's admission
into, the-United Nations. . They
pointed out that if the Commu
nists accept his offer and confer
with him, this could be used to
argue that the United Nations
has given a form of de facto rec
ognition to the Peiping regime.
Today's edition of the British
owned Mail of Hong Kong said
editorially that Hammarskj old's
offer, "may strengthen the re
solve of non-Communist nations
to have the Peiping regime seat
ed as soon as possible."

Hiring Handicapped Found Good Business
North Bergen, N. J. (U.R)
Toby Stern has discovered that
hiring the handicapped can be
anything but a handicap to a
company.
More than a quarter of the
600 employes at his Jacques
Kreisler Manufacturing Corp.
have 'some type of physical in
firmity, but that doesn't mean
they can't do a jobv, ' V
"Any one who can handle a
specific job even - reasonably
well cannot be said to be handi
capped," Stern said. '"Practical-
ly alT of us can handle several
jobs. To label a person as handi
capped is unfair and unjust."
In the Kreisler plant a man
who is paralyzed from the waist
down drives his car to work
and, using crutches, operates a
power press.
A woman paralyzed from her
shoulders to her elbows handles
an intricate job of -assembling
expansion watch bands.

of San Diego, ending a 'round-the-world
goodwill cruise. ;
The Hornet began her jour

stopping at Lisbon, Naples, Co
lumbo, Ceylon and Singapore.
After arriving "in the Far East,
the 32,000 ton carrier did a stint
of picket duty with the U. S.
Seventh fleet. She returned to
San Francisco yesterday.

Another paralytic is a parts
adjuster. '
'These people are so conscien
tious about their work," Stern
said, "that their production often
exceeds that of their physically
whole co-workers.
"Not only that, but they're
more conscious of hazards so
they set a better safety record
and influence others to do the
same."
