S!1 Henry Cabot Lodge (left) presents to UN
t Secy. Gen. Dag Hammarskjold in New York a resolution
; demanding that Red China release immediately 11 U S
airmen jailed on "spy" charges in violation of the Korean
armistice. The resolution calls on the secretary general to
make by the means most appropriate in his judgment
continuing and unremitting efforts to obtain the release
oi the airmen."
Council Denies Sewer
Connection in Area
Of New City School
The Medford city coupcil last
. night denied an application by
representatives of the Garfield
subdivision to connect to the
new sanitary sewer line to the
Jefferson grade school, now un
der construction south of the
city.
The action was taken in view
of a special committee's recom
mendation, which stated that
the proposed subdivision is not
contiguous to the city, nor is it
a fully-fledged sanitary, district,
Harold Frye, committee chair
man, reported that such applica
tions pose the problem of giving
utility services to outside city
residents, who then would have
no desire or need to be annexed
to the city.
Annexation Advised
Mayor D. L. Flynn stated that
the representatives should con
eider annexation to the city to
obtain the service, and that the
city would cooperate in achiev
ing the status.
In other business, Earl Miller,
police and traffic - committee
head, recommended that . 21
parking spaces on the span and
approaches to the Main st.
bridge be metered. This was ap
proved, and the meter rental
payment plan adopted as no spe
cific funds were budgeted for
the purpose. The meters will
have two-hour . limits.
A sewer rate ordinance was
adopted. It will make the rates
conform with the new water rate
schedule. City Supt. Robert
Duff said the new sewer sched
ule will "not appreciably change
the present revenues."
Seek Certification
The city superintendent was
authorized to join with the
Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce in seeking to expe
dite U.S. government action on
granting a permanent operating
certificate to Southwest Air
ways, which has been pending
for some time. .
Authority was also given to
sign requests for federal aid
and project applications with
the Civil Aeronautics adminis
tration. Local funds are matched
with federal on the1 projects.
The council also appointed At
torney Warren Lesseg as city
judge pro tem till Jan. 1 during
the absence of James Main; ap
proved the annual audit by Ice
land Knox; okayed fuel ' pay
ments for the Ground Observa
tion corps station under Civil
Defense accounts; , approved
curbs and gutters for, George
Goodman's property on Ninth
st., from the alley to Central
ave., and curbs and gutters in
front of the Aaron Ayres prop
erty on North Groveland ave.;
approved a 10-year lease 'with
Robert von der Hellen for air
port space; rented airport ware
house space for $120 annually,
and approved of the Medford
Meat company's facilities under
the new meat inspection ordi
nance. (See story on Page 1),
Employment Changes
Said Less Than Usual
Washington (U.R) Unem
ployment rose by 79,000 and em
ployment dropped 410,000 last
month..
But top government econo
mists found this report encour
aging because the changes, al
though unfavorable, were less
than usually occur in November.
In a joint statement today, Sec
retary of Commerce Sinclair
Weeks and Secretary of -Labor
James P. Mitchell said the re
port reflected a "further im
provement in the job situation."
Total unemployment rose to
2,893,000 compared with 2,741,
000 in October. Employment
dropped to 61,731,000 as against
62,141,000 in October.
A 675,000 gain in the number j
of non-agricultural jobs was
more than offset by a loss of
1,805,000 farm jobs.

Rattlesnake's Age
Determined by Bones
Los Angeles (U.R) Bones de
termine the age of a rattlesnake,
not rattles.
Bayard . -Brattstrom, UCLA
zoologist, f : said the - "growth
rings" in the bones of the rattler
tell how old it is. The rings oc
cur throughout the snake's skele
tal system. Brattstrom uses a
small bone from the head of the
snake, in which the rings are
discernible, to determine age.
As for te rattles, said Bratt
strom, a rattlesnake a3ds a new
one each time it sheds skin. This
occurs several times a year
when the snake is young. .Older
snakes often lose some of their
rattles by accident, he said.
Rattlers usually live to be
about 15 years of age. ,
Of all the private cars owned
in the U.S., 73 per cent are used
for, traveling to jobs, conducting
business, or doing the daily farm
chores.
Quarantine Declared
On Khapra Beetle
Salem (U.R) The Oregon
State Department of Agriculture
has declared a quarantine, ef
fective at once, against certain
counties in Arizona, California
and New Mexico in an effort to
prevent introduction of the
Khapra beetle into Oregon. '
Counties included in the quar- j
antme are Maricopa, Mohave,
Pima, Pinal and Yuma in Ari
zona; Curry and Roosevelt in
New Mexico; and Fresno, Im
perial, Kern, Kings, Riverside,
Tulare and San Francisco in California.
Introduction of this insect
pest found in the United States
last year for the first time into
Oregon would result in great fi
nancial loss to agriculture and
related interests, the department
said. The beetle is a pest pri
marily oi stored products.
' The Presidio of San Francisco
is one of the oldest and most im
portant Army headquarters in
me united states.
