film his NBC show.
As hi3 chief euest star he chose
Chevalier, who hasn't been seen
in the U.S. since 1947. After that
the Frenchman fell into political
-disfavor and was unable to get a
visa to enter the country until re

"I first met him in 1945," said

his house to rest after flying in
from Texas.

Hope is so enthusiastic about
making TV an around-the-world
event that he predicts an inter
national network, with American
TV sets picking up televised
events from foreign countries via
an overseas cable. Next year he
plans to film an entire TV show
in Paris at the invitation of the
French government.
One Disadvantage
There was only one disadvan

English studio audience for his

"When the announcer came

started talking about cake mix,

Lower Premiums
Due School-Trained
Student Drivers
The Mayflower Insurance ex
change this week announced a
20 per cent reduction in driver
insurance premiums for gradu
ates of high school driver-training
programs.
Carl Weidner, state manager
of the firm, made the announce
ment during a Medford visit yes
terday. He said the reduction is
being granted in the firm's 26
agencies, including two in Med
ford. . He said the decision to make
the reductions came after a study
of the records of driver-trained
students, which showed the un
trained young drivers have up
to five times as many arrests
and accidents as those with
training.
The reductions will go to such
students and to the families of
students who have had the train
ing. Only requirements to ob
tain the reduced premium is a
certificate of completion of the
course.
Driver-trained students in all
Jackson county high schools are
eligible, Weidner said. The two
Mayflower agencies in Medford
are those operated by John
Maas, 218 South Central ave.,
and Earl Heft, 118 North River
side ave.

As We Live
By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D.
Son Must Take Chances
Of Mothei's Finances
There are times when personal
feelings must be put aside and
action must be taken, even if it
may result in hard feelings.
Such a case is described by the
young man who writes:
(Q) "A year ago. my father
died and left my mother well
fixed for the rest of her life.
Mother has always been poor
at figures and has no sense
of money values. While Dad
lived, he kept a careful watch
over how my mother spent her
money and he never permitted
her to have charge accounts
Ministers Will Aid
In Blood Program
Members of the Medford
Ministerial association, meeting
for breakfast yesterday morning,
heard an appeal for their sup
port of the Red Cross blood pro
gram. 4
Eugene Kooser presented the
appeal on behalf of the Red
Cross, and several the 17 minis
ters present undertook to pro
vide from three to five donors
from their congregations, and
otherwise to support the pro
gram in any way possible.
Three members, the Rev.
Messrs. Kenneth Korby, Ray
mond E. Balcombr and Norman
K. Tully, were named to a com
mittee to meet with members
of the local electrical workers
union. A letter from the Inter
national Electrical Workers un
ion had invited discussions lead
ing to a closer relationship be
tween the groups..
The association voted to ex
press appreciation to local stores
and individuals for their co
operation in the current display
of old and unusual Bibles being
made in connection with the
Bible emphasis program be
tween Thanksgiving and Christ
mas. . '
The association president, the
Rev. Willis Loar of the East
wood Baptist church, presided.
Devotions were led by Mr. Bal
comb of the First Methodist
church.
Civilian Defense
Men Get Training
Three local men represented
Jackson county and city of Ash
land civil defense organizations
at a rescue training course held
recently in Eugene, according to
Col. Charles Stafford, county
civil defense director.
Representing the county civil
defense agency were William R.
Flagg, chief weighmaster in
charge of traffic for the county
engineer's office, and LeRoy
Williams, of the Medford fire
department. Capt. Charles D.
Davis of the Ashland fire de
partment represented the Ash
land city agency. .
The men received instruction
in casualty handling, use of
rescue trucks, tools and equip
ment, and other information
pertaining to civil defense res
cue operations! The course was
conducted by a federal Civil De
fense administration rescue dem
onstration team.
Purpose of the course, accord
ing to Colonel Stafford, was to
instruct those who attended in
fundamental rescue techniques
so they could demonstrate them
to those in their own civil de
fense organizations.

at the stores. Now she is on a
spending spree, buying right
and left and charging every
thing. If she keeps this up, she
will be penniless in a short
time.
"1 am the only son, though
I have two married sisters.
They live far enough away so
that they are not aware of
what our mother is doing with
her money. My wife thinks I
should manage Mother's money
for her as my father did, but
I hesitate to suggest it to her
because I am afraid she will
think I have a personal motive
for wanting to get her money
into my hands.- How would
you suggest ihat I handle this
problem?" . .. ,
(A) I suggest that you stop
thinking about how your mother
may. feel about your offers to
help her man
age her finan
cial affairs
and take ac
tion at once.
Other wise
when she is
penniless, you
may find you
are the one
who will have
to assume the
r e sponsibility
for supporting
her.
Tell her in no uncertain terms
that money is not made of rub
ber, to be stretched to any de
sired size. Make tip a budget for
her, based on the money she has
and the income it will bring an
nually. Tell her exactly what
she can afford to spend for food,
clothing, a home, medical ex
penses, etc.
Then advise her to close her
charge accounts. To a person
with spendthrift tendencies,
charge accounts invite trouble.
If she has to pay cash for some
thing she is tempted to buy, she
may find the temptation waning.
Each week, go over the ac
counts she is asked to keep and
point out her purchases that
were unwise. All of this, I real
ize, sounds as if you were deal
ing' with your child instead of
your mother. But if she is be
having like a child in handling
her money, you must treat her
as a child.
