Demonstration Set
For X-Ray Program
This Afternoon
A demonstration and explana
tion of the permanent chest
x-ray centers for Medford's two
largest hospitals will be given
at 5 p.m. today on the regular
bi-weekly television show of the
Jackson County Public Health
association.
The center at Community hos
pital began operation Dec. 1,
giving chest x-rays to 23 persons
during the first hours of service
to the public. A similar program
is scheduled to begin at Sacred
Heart hospital about Jan. 1. All
hospital admittances are also
x-rayed.

Appearing on today's program
will be Dr. C. I. Drummond,
who will present the x-ray pro
gram from a private physician's
standpoint; Dr. A. E. Merkel,
Jackson county public health de
partment; Miss B. J. Larson,
Community hospital administra
tor; Mrs. George Schuler, health
association volunteer; Sam
Remo, x-ray technician at Com
munity; Seth Bullis, health asso
ciation board member; Mrs.
Jack Walker, chairman of the as
sociation's case-finding program,
and Mrs. Chester Guches, asso
ciation president.
Financing of the permanent
x-ray centers provided largely
through purchase of Christmas
-. seals, according to Mrs. Guches,
with the exception of a $1.75
charge per x-ray covering only
the actual cost of the picture,

Jacksonville Slaies
Christmas Opening
Jacksonville A group of
Jacksonville merchants is spon
soring a Christmas opening cele
bration on Dec. 11 at 6 p.m.
Santa Claus will be on hand to
greet the children and will pass
out bags of candy, officials said.
A prize will be donated for the
most attractive window decora
tions, and other events will be
announced later.
Police Chief Frank Carter has
been, cooperating with the group
and has placed street decorations
in preparation for the opening. '
School Board Head
Plans To Attend
District Meeting
Gardner Knapp, Salem, presi
dent of the Oregon School Board
association, will attend a meet
ing of District 13 of the asso
ciation here tomorrw afternoon,
according to Mrs. Stephen Nye,
Medford, District 13 chairman.
Knapp will lead a discussion
of legislation proposed by the
OSBA, and will explain some
of the proposals. Other discus
sion leaders will be State Sen.
Gene Brown, Grants Pass, who
will talk on the state's financial
situation; Leonard Mayfield,
Medford assistant superintend
ent of schools, who will speak on
proposed changes in distribution
of funds for school transporta
tion, and Frank C. Bash, Med
ford school board member, who
will speak on suggested revi
sions in the distribution of basic
school support funds.
Four Counties ,
Members of school boards in
Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and
Lake counties have been invited,
as have members of the legis
lature representing the four
counties.
The meeting will get under
way at 4:30 p.m. at the Medford
High school, and will continue
through dinner and into the
evening.
Mrs. Nye, a member of the
Medford' school board, served as
its president for two years.
Accordion Band Sets
Journey to Seattle
A group of 20 accordion band
members of the Eve Prentice
studios will leave Thursday,
Dec. 9, for Seattle, Wash., where
they will play a number of con
certs. Friday morning they will play
before a high school assembly
and at noon they are invited to
play at a luncheon at Ft. Law
ton. That afternoon the group
will play for an hour over the
television station, KING-TV. In
the evening they will be at Ft.
Lewis, Wash., to play before
service clubs and the group will
stay at Ft." Lewis for the night.
Saturday they will appear at
the Madigan General hospital
and also at the Ft. Le"wis theater.
They will return here Sunday
evening.

Logs Fly as Truck And Train Collide In Central Point
Central Point A Southern
Pacific freight train collided with
a stalled logging truck at the
Pine ' st. crossing in Central
Point Friday at about 5:40 p.m.
Eye witnesses called it a spec
tacular accident.
No injuries resulted to the
driver of the loaded truck, who
was in his cab. The train's en
gineer, Martin Tasanady, re
ceived a slight cut on his cheek,
according to Police Chief Oran
Chastain. The engine was about
600 feet past the scene of the
collision when it stopped. The
force of the impact threw one
of the logs on top of the diesel
engine's cab where it balanced
until it was removed. Several
36-inch logs were cut in two
and Central . Point's "depot," a
small 10 by 12-foot building.was
demolished by the logs, Chas
tain said.
Hears Train Whistle
In reconstructing the accident,
the police chief stated, that the
truck, driven by Arthur St.
German, Central Point, was on
the tracks when he heard the
train whistle and slammed on
his breaks. He was unable to get
the truck in gear in time to move
it off the tracks, and it was
struck in the middle. There ap
peared to be only minor damages
to the cab, officials said, but the
engine was . considerably dam
aged from striking the logs.
Engineer Tasanady stayed at
his controls and kept blowing
the whistle until the collision,
Chastain reported. A crewman
in the cab was able to go to'the
rear part of the engine to avoid
injury. C. E. Walker was the
train conductor.
Lewis and Clark were the first
trail blazers to mark out a way
from St. Louis to the present
known mouth of the Columbia
river.
