River high Chieftains open their
basketball season Friday . as
hosts to Illinois Valley and they
have a jamboree and six other
regular conflicts before starting
the Jackson County B ieague
campaign on January 7.
Four lettermen are on the
Chief roster and one of them,
Clete Daily has been lamed by
a broken ankle. The other letter-wearers
are Ted Stanfield
and Gary Johnson, both two
year vets, and Loyd Morrow.
Head Coach Ray McLain had
indicated that center for the
tartine tansle will be either Bill
Weaver or Johnson with for
wards to be chosen from among
Stanfield, Harold Moore and
Scott Thorell. Top guard candi
dates are Morrow, Gary Stinch
comb and Gary Phillips.
All the lettermen are seniors
Weaver is a 5-foot 1-inch junior
and Thorell, Phillips, Stinch
comb and Moore are his class
mates.
Rogue River has two games
each scheduled with Illinois Val
ley, Eagle Point, Crater and
Phoenix, all small A schools.
The B loop opener is against
Prospect.

The Beavers, led by six-foot,
five-inch center Tony Vlastelica,
piled up 12 points in the first
six minutes of play before ihe
Rainbows could get on the score-.
boards. The Beavers led 26-17
at halftime.
The shorter Hawaiian team
caught fire in the second half
after OSC Guard Ron Robins
hit three set shots, and narrowed
the count to within five points,
43-38.
