Policy on Purchases

from foreign companies which
underbid American firms on gov
ernment projects.

Last spring Kuchel protested
when a Japanese company was
the apparent low bidder for
equipment for the Columbia riv

bids were thrown out because of
ambiguities and failure to com
ply with specifications, Kuchel
said.

Unity Near Certainty

Reuther, president of the CIO
and United Auto Workers, pre
dicted last night that unity of
tne CIO and the AFL is certain
and "closer than ever."
Reuther expressed his optim
ism for unification of the two
unions when he arrived here by
plane for executive sessions
prior to Monday's opening of
the national CIO convention.
The CIO head said he felt
confident the convention would
approve unity steps taken to
date.
Former Broadway
Slar Has Birthday

Trixie Friganza, the toast of
Broadway at the turn of the
century when she was known
as the champagne girl, today
looked forward to "many more
years of life" after celebrating
her 83rd birthday.
The former famed comedienne
observed her birthday yesterday
at the Sacred Heart academy
where arthritis has confined her
to a bed and a wheelchair for
15 years.
She received hundreds of
birthday cards from all over the
world, but was unable to read
them because of cataracts on
both eyes.
She admitted she was in con
stant pain, but added, "I have
had a great many happy years
and I'm looking forward to
many more."

Farmers To Share Land Bank Dividend
One hundred eighty-eight
farmers and ranchers in Jackson
and Josephine counties will
share in a $312,000 dividend, de
clared by the Federal Land
Bank of Spokane. F. E. Bow
man, secretary-treasurer of the
Southern Oregon National Farm
Loan association, has an
nounced. The 6 per cent dividend will
be paid to 65 national farm loan
associations in Idaho, Montana,
Oregon and Washington, Bow
man said. , Like ' the Southern
Oregon association, the other 64
NFLA's also will pass on most of
this dividend to the farmers and
ranchers who have land bank
loans and own all of the associa
tion's stock. The bank's capital
stock is owned entirely by the
65 associations.
Bowman said the bank has
paid out more than $2,600,000
in dividends in the last nine
years and most of this money
has been passed on to land bank
borrowers through their asso
ciations. These dividends, he
said, have the effect of reducing
the 4 per cent interest cost on
loans.

Workers Get Raise

electrical workers union an
nounced yesterday it has nego
tiated hourly wage boosts of 4
and 10-cents for 1500 Oregon
and Washington employees of
the West Coast Telephone com
pany. The 10-cent increase would be
given plant employees. Traffic
and commercial employees
would receive a 4-cent, boost.
A new contract agreement
was recently reached by Pacific
Telephone and Telegraph company-
employees represented by
the CIO Communications union.
