talk going when you're alone
with one person. A young wo
man writes:

not a good conversationalist.
In a crowd I'm all right, bo
cause I just ride along with Iho
rest. But when I'm on a date,
I get completely tongue - tied.
I read somewhere to make a
list of subjects to talk about
and refer to it once or twice
during the evening. I havo
tried this, and it just doesn't
seem to work. I woujd appre
ciate any advice you would

((A) Making a list of topics
will work if you use it right. In
the first place, if possible a list
should fit the interests of the per
son you are going out with. Since
all people have different inte
rests, topics that would interest
one might not interest another.
If yoa don't know the person
well enough to know what his in
terests are, you will always be
safe if you list topics that will re
late to him. All

suggestion is to
know your list
well enough
that you do.not
have to refer
to it during the

through with a good story end
as likely as not it has an element
of truth in it,
at least the
core or theme
of the piece is
plausible, al
though the em
broidery may
be a shade
too fancy.
The latest is
about the two
mothers who
Dr. Brady were handed
the wrong babies in an English
hospital.' Somehow .the' babies
got mixed during feeding time
out there in the show window
(you know, what nineteenth
century hospitals call the "nurs
ery for newborn.")
The mothers, who, under the
rigid hospital rules, so dear to
the hearts (am I serious?) of
nineteenth century lying-in in
stitutions, had not been permit
ted to get acquainted with their
babies, so the poor souls both
accepted whatever . the hospital
authorities handed them.
Well, sir, the swap might have
come off all right, but after the
two young mothers had gone
home, each with the other's
baby, the hospital authorities be
came worried about the mix-up,
and made some blood tests which
proved that the babies had been
exchanged. But the respective
parents no, the putative oh,
well, the two couples were still
perfectly satisfied with the
babies they had brou'ght home
from the hospital and there we
leave them.
If the young English couples
had been sensible enough to have
their babies at home the best
place to have a baby, at least in
Yankeeland they would not
have had to decide to turn in
the baby they have learned to
love for another, just because a
cold scientific blood test shows
that the baby they were issued
by the jokers at the hospital
really belongs to some one else.
It may be that these mixed
up young people were unaware
of the rooming-in method which
is now used in twentieth century
lying-in institutions the hus
band is encouraged and expect
ed to remain with his wife as
much as he can before, during
ana alter the birth of the baby,
and the baby is kept at mother's
side from birth until the mother
goes home. This gives the young
parerts a chance to get acquaint
ed with their baby, to give the
baby the warm love and affec
tion a newborn baby instinctive
ly wants and to learn how to
keep the baby comfortable and
happy when they, go home.
Where rooming-in is practiced
there is no crowding of babies
together in the show window
where a nurse, even though
gowned and , masked as per
script may so easily convey in
fection from one luckless infant
to the other..
Lying-in institutions that still
maintain the show window "nur
sery" for newborn infants, gen
erally employ one means or an
other to prevent confusion of
identities, at no great expense
to the dumb customers, name
bracelets, records of footprints,
tatoo marks and whatnot.

pital authorities hand you a
