Grocers association to prevent
milk distributors from charging
retailers 40 cents for each milk
delivery no matter how large.
. The Association claimed that
the delivery charge was dis-
" criminatory against small retail
ers because the charge was the
same even if 1,000 quarts were
delivered. ''

Francisco because it was neces
sary to' file it in a locality where
there was an office of the State
Attorney General. ; .
Sapiro said a hearing will be

on whether the restraining order

of the Northeastern Federal . Penitentiary, Saturday released the
following official statement concerning the release of Alger Hiss:
; "As provided by law, Alger
United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg, Pa., Saturday .
. "Hiss was committed to Lewisburg on March 28, 1951, un
der a sentence of five years commencing March 22, 1951. Under
the law he is entitled as a matter of right to deduction from bis
sentence of eight days for each
good.
"Section 4161 to 4163 of Title
ance for good conduct and the courts have, on several occasions,
held that no discretion rests in the department with respect to
the allowance of these credits if the prisoner's. 'record of conduct
shows that he. has faithfully observed all the rules and has been
subjected to punishment.'
"Hiss, since he has been in Lewisburg, has not been reported
for any infraction of the rules. Hiss has received only . those
credits for good conduct that are granted to all prisoaers under
the statute."

when the plane crash-landed at

Injured in Crash
' Belmont, Calif. (U.R)
The pilot and passenger in a
rented light plane were injured
Saturday when the pilot attemp
ted to make a deadstick landing
on Ralston road west of here,
San Mateo county sheriff's of
ficers reported.
Pilot George Lagomorsino, 29,
and Harry French, both of Daly
City, were taken to San Mateo
community hospital after the
wing of their Luscombe plane
caught on a hillside, pitching
the craft onto the road.
Their injuries were not im
mediately learned.
Sheriff's officers said the en
gine had failed. The plane was
virtually demolished and the
road was blocked for nearly an
hour. Gasoline from the ruptur
ed fuel tanks flowed over the
road and county fireman were
called out to wash it down.
. Fortunately there was no traf
fic on the road at the time of
the crash. ?
The plane was rented from
the Watson Flying service at
San Carlos airport.

Pleads Innocent
To Assault Charge
McMinnville . (U.R) Har
ace Crowley, 21 , Dayton, Ore.,
pleaded innocent in circuit court
here Saturday to a charge of as
sault with intent to kill in con
nection with a beating adminis
tered his four-year-old stepson
Richard Lightle. .
. The boy has been unconscious
since the beating Nov. 15. He
was being cared for at a Port
land hospital, where doctors said
he has had a number of-small
hemorrhages of the brain. The
boy is expected to live, but the
permanency of the brain damage
is not known.
Crowley waived Grand Jury
indictment on the assault, charge
earlier. His attorney, James E.
Craig of McMinnville, indicat
ed he was thinking of filing a
motion for a change of venue
because of the strong feeling
against his client in Yamhill
county.
Dep. Dist. Atty. H. W. Devlin
said Crowley had signed a state
ment admitting the. beating aft
er having "trouble" with the
boy. No trial date was set.
Man Crushed To Death
While Family Watches
Richmond, Calif. (U.R)
Charles M. Terrell, 46, Berkeley
contractor, was crushed to death
Saturday as his wife and small
son watched when a house he
was jacking up slipped and fell
on him.
Terrell and his partner," Le
roy Baker, 45, Richmond, had
been raising the house to "install
a basement floor. The house was
eight feet off the ground when
one of the jacks slipped. The
house fell sideways and a heavy
beam struck Terrell, crushing
his chest.
The tragedy was viewed by
his wife, Wilma, 25, and their
son, Charles Jr., 8, who-had
been waiting for him 'to finish
work. " ; ."

Tolly, wife of Maj. Nicholas De
Tolly, U.S. air attache in Paris,
flew here to be at her mother's

16-Year-Old Killed
In Headon Collision
Merced, Calif. (U.R) Clifford
DeWayne Bell, 16, Watsonville,
was killed Saturday when his
car collided head-on with a
gravel truck near here.
California Highway Patrol of
ficers said Bell apparently tried
to turn while going too fast and
crossed the center line. Truck
driver Leroy Jones, 22, of Stev
enson, was uninjured.
Police said Bell's parents lived
at Turlock. - '

employment insurance claims
rose by 41,600 last week because
of seasonal job lay-offs and a
backlog of claims from the pre
vious Veterans Day holiday week
the Labor Department has an
nounced.' But despite the rise, the total
of 228,700 in new claims still is
lower than the total for the same
week a year ago, the department
said Friday night. It was the
third consecutive week in which
claims were down from the same
week of 1953.

tion Saturday got down to the
business of picking the best
steers, hogs and lambs from the
nation's farmlands.
First on tap were more than
300 fresh faced 4-H boys and
girls who offered their junior
steers and hogs for judging.
The judging of about 300
steers held the spotlight. In years
past the junior grand champion
has often gone ahead to win the
exposition's brightest crown
the grand champion steer award.
The farm youths also put up
33 hogs for judging.
The exposition, the biggest
farm show in the world, opened
at the International Amphithe
ater Friday night with a horse

Montgomery Says
War Is Unlikely
