Jent. The four new members in
itiated were Mrs. Georgiana
JBeiers, Mrs. Mildred Hughes,
Mrs. Marie Pierce and Mrs. Mar
fan Wood.
The membership committee,
Iwith Mrs. Anna McNeil as chair
tanan, was in charge of the pro
gram. Dr. Paul Olsen, owner of
the "Enchanted Grotto" and a
'member of Roxy Ann Gem and
Mineral club, spoke on gems and
minerals in Oregon and exotic
stones found in various parts of
the world.
A Christmas party for BPW
members will be. held at 7:30
p.m. Thursday, December 16, in
the employees club room at
Camp White. - .

Miss Jean Thompson and her
mother, Mrs. James Thompson,
Hanley, England, today will ob
serve for their first . time the
traditional American . holiday.
Thanksgivings at the home of
Mrs. Thompson's son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs.' Harold
Boss, Hartley lane. Miss Thomp
son, who arrived recently in
America to visit for six months
with her sister, has been ill
and hospitalized at Ashland Gen
eral hospital. She is now con
valescing at the home, of her sis
ter, and her mother 'arrived to
be with her daughter while she
was still confined to the hos
pital. Miss Thompson has improved
greatly since she left the hospital
and will be able to be with the
rest of the family at the holiday
dinner. -
Others at the dinner in ad
dition to Mr. and Mrs. Ross and
Miss Thompson Mrs. Thompson
will be the Rosses' three child-
. ren, Annette, Sharon and Russell.
The two English women will
leave here Monday, Nov. 29 by
United Air lines for New York
1 City and from there will en
plane for England by Pan Amer
ican air lines for London. They
will arrive there Wednesday at
9 p.m.
Arrangements for Miss
Thompson's return trip to Eng
land by air were made possible
' through the cooperation of

mother, Mrs. Fred Brandenburg,
Huron, S. D., who has been a
guest of Mrs. Rudd for several
days, left yesterday evening for
Richmond, Calif., to visit with
Mrs. Rudd's brother, Daniel J.
Conway. Mrs. Brandenburg will
leave from Richmond for her
home, and Mrs. Rudd will return
to Medford Friday. -
Metal Industry Top
Portland Employer
Portland U.R) The lumber
industry no longer is the lead
ing employer , in the Portland
metropolitan area, a research
agency said today.
The Stanford Research Insti
tute reported that the metal in
dustry has replaced the lumber
industry in this capacity.
The report, prepared in co
operation with the Chamber of
Commerce, also said Portland
didn't experience a big retrench
ment after World War II. Be
tween 1947 and 1955 some 600
industrial firms and branch es
tablishments located in the area
and about 400 firms expanded
their operations. The report
added that 237 of the former had
since gone out of business.
Cornell Makes Study
Of Royal Bee Jelly
Ithaca, N.Y. (U.R) Cornell
University wants to know if
royal jelly Is as good for people
as it is for bees.
The university has set up 40
bee cages on the campus and is
slowly scraping out the royal
jelly a sticky chemical that
nurse bees make and queen bees
eat.
Cornell's biologists want to
learn if royal jelly really cures
diseases and spruces up the skin
claims that have been made
for it. So far, say the scientists,
there is no "reliable and conclu
sive research" that backs up
these claims, and there won't be
any for many months. The ex
periments will take time.
42 Passengers Hurt
In Santa Fe Wreck
Needles, Calif. --CU.R) Eight
of the 11 cars of the Santa, Fe
Chief were derailed by a broken
rail on the Mojave Desert, near
here last night. Forty-two of the
95 passengers ; aboard suffered
minor injuries, a railroad spokes
man said.
All 95 passengers resumed
their trip east today aboard a:
substitute train. '
The train was en route from
Los Angeles to Chicago when
the derailment occurred at 9:05
p.m. (PST), about 65 miles west
of here.
None of the eight derailed
cars, comprising the rear section
of the train,' overturned. The
forward section, which remained
on the rails, was used to bring
the passengers here to board the
substitute train. -
Portland Youth Dies
In Wreck Hear Sandy.
Sandy ' (U.R) A 16-year-old
Portland youth wat killed
and nine other boys were shak
en up yesterday when the auto
in which they were riding over
turned on Bluff road three miles
north of Sandy. .. . t
State police identified the
victim as Robert Nels Hansen.
He was driving the car and was
thrown from the vehicle and in
stantly killed as it flipped over.
The 10 youths, according to
state police, were returning from
an afternoon trip to Mt. Hood.

Barkley Celebrates
77th Birth Anniversary .
Brunswick,' Ga. (U.R) Sen.
elect Alben Barkley of Kentucky
celebrated his 77th birthday at
nearby Sea Island yesterday and
said fin spirit, I am still a young
man.''. ....
The former vice-president and
Mrs. Barkley arrived at Sea Is
land a week ago and took up
residence in the same beachfront
cottage where they honeymooned
five years ago. They are resting
from his successful senatorial
campaign andcelebrating their
fifth wedding anniversary.

(CIO), said today the Northwest
Regional Policy committee of
the Union had decided to make
no . additional demands at this
time for 1955 contract negotia
tions. A seven-man governors fact
finding panel , is studying 1954
demands of the union. . .
Hartung said the woodwork
ers had asked for a 12 Vz cent-an-hour
pay. increase, a third
week of vacation and a job
classification study. . These de
mands are still before the parties
