Limestone Slab Removed
The long closed gallery was
opened with the removal of a
huge limestone slab from" the
forward end of the sand-buried,
rock-cut drydock in which the
boat of the Fharoah lies.'
For the first time it became
possible to' see the full length
of the : gracefully fashioned
craft, one of a type in which
Egypt's ancient rulers believed
their souls would be borne
through the heavens to the king
dom of the dos. ! .

Heart Attack Thought
Cause of Car Accident'
Joe C. Covey, 61, Box 203,
Prospect, was brought to Sacred
Heart hospital by Medford Am
bulance service this morning,
after he was injured in a one
car accident, according to ambu
lancemen. Covey is thought to have suffered-
a- heart attack, causing
the accident. He was also being
treated for facial cuts, and in
juries to both legs.

of brown cedar wood which the
ancient Egyptians brought from

Traffic Congestion
Study Under Way
Chicago (U.R) The National
Committee on Urban Transpor
tation is beginning a major
study to develop ways in which
all American cities can eliminate
traffic congestion, provide ade-
quate parking and improve mass
transportation. y
More than 140 municipal of
ficers from all parts of the coun
try have been named to serve
with the committee in gathering
facts and preparing recommen
dations in the first concerted,
nationwide program to solve the
urban transportation problem.
The committee will determine
the facts cities need to develop
transportation facilities on a
sound and economical basis.
Committee members will help
direct pilot studies of transpor
tation problems in selected
cities.
Standards and methods devel
oped in the pilot studies will be
put in manual form for use, by
all cities in tackling . their
their problems. '
The National Committee on
Urban Transportation was form
ed last spring by six national or
ganizations: The American Mu
nicipal Association, the Ameri
can, Public 'Works Association,
the American Society of Plan
ning Officials, the International
City, Managers' Association, the
Municipal Finance Officers As
sociatio nand the National Insti-
tude of Municipal Law Officers.
. The U.S. Bureau of Roads is
cooperating in the program.

jury in a Communist testimony
investigation, was found beaten
severely in his dormitory at the
federal penitentiary here yester
day, it was disclosed today.
Assaulted With Brick
Warden Fred T. Wilkinson
said Remington "apparently was
assaulted with a piece of a brick
encased in a prison issue sock.
Remington, serving a three.
year sentence, was taken to the
prison hospital in serious con
dition. Doctors said he lost consider
able blood, had multiple lacera
tions of the face and head and a
probable skull fracture.
Wilkinson said the identity of
the assailant was "fairly well
established." He said FBI agents
took charge of the investigation
of. the incident and questioned
prisoners until well past midnight.
There were unofficial reports
Remington was beaten by a gang
of prisoners.
Sentenced Last Year
Remington, was convicted ' of
perjury in connection with
charges he lied when he denied
giving anyone secret classified
information. He was sentenced
to his prison term Feb. 4, 1953,
and was free on appeal until
April 15, 1953, when he began
serving his sentence.
The attack on Remington oc
curred, as preparations were
underway for the release of Al
ger Hiss, former high State De
partment official, on Saturday.

Unusual Road Signs

signs are being tried in the
states of Washington and New
York, according to the American
Public Works Association. v
Colored signs are on trial in
Seattle, Spokaneand Olympia,
Wash.; to aid drivers who might
become confused by the maze
of metropolitan directions. -
The New York Thruway has
outsize reflecting signs along the
first section opened near Syra

way department is experiment
ing with the colored signs as an
aid to out-of-town motorists.
Route-markers are colored, ac
cording to the. direction, a route

Northbound routes are mark
ed 'with orange - signs, south

brown and westbound are blue.
The New York Thruway signs
are among the largest ever built.
Signs marked with the single
word, "Exit," measure four by
eight feet. The largest of the
thruway signs are 30 by 10 feet.
