Chestnut Dressing
"It's all too easy nowadays,"
Mary said. "But at our house we
realize that the turkey is served
at other- times of the year, too.
So we concentrate on what is
left of the good old days that
chestnut dressing. Want to hear
my recipe?"
. I sure did and here it is:
"Just boil a pound or so of
chestnuts, for about 15 minutes,"
Mrs. Daly said. "Then peel the
skins off and while they are still
hot, push them through a sieve
or colander. Add them to the
dressing. You can make your
own dressing toasted bread
broken up and mixed with cel
ery and onions plus plenty of
butter. Put in a bit of sage, cel
ery dried parsley, and a half
teaspoon of baking powder to
keep the dressing light."
Magic Eye Replaces

up with a "magic eye" in inspec
tion of documents for irregulari
ties. The VA said the new elec
tronic eye could easily spot
scratch-outs, obliterations, eras
ures and the like in the docu
ments relating to VA-adminis-tered
benefits for veterans and
their families.
Previously the VA depended
on eye. detection or a costly and
time-consuming process of infra
red photography, often with in
conclusive results. The VA said
that the new "eye" can imme
diately spot any irregularities
whether in ink, pencil or typing.
Under the device, which looks
like a television camera, tam
pered portions of papers stand
out in strong contrast. If a signa
ture has been changed, the origi
nal signature will stand out
clearly. , :.
The device, according to the
VA, was adapted from the infra
red "magic eye" used on world
war II sniper rifles with built-in
telescopes.

Damaged by Flames
Waldport (U.R) An esti
mated $10,000 damage was
caused by a fire which yester
day gutted a shop building at
Waldport high school. .
Fire Chief Wes Kirkland said
the fire apparently was started
by an electrical oven which had
been left turned on during the
weekend. The fire was discover
ed at 8:15 a.m., and was extin
guished ! an hour later.
Kirkland said the shop equip
ment was destroyed in the blaze
and the high school music room,
which adjoined, suffered water
damage. The loss was covered
by insurance.

Force deserter, has confessed the
murder of a policeman at Lake
Placid in a furious gunbattle last
August and will be arraigned on
a charge of first degree murder,
state police said Saturday.
Call confessed he killed Pa
trolman Richard Pelkey and
wounded two others when ' he
was surprised during a burglary
and then walked about 300 miles
through the rugged Adirondack
mountains to escape one of the
biggest manhunts in New York
state's history. "
He was captured in Reno,
Nev., last week in a burglary
investigation and returned to
New York after a sharp eyed
