kins and candles. Branches of
madrone with leaves and berries
were placed about the room.
The luncheon was served from
a buffet table.
A special prize was awarded
to Mrs. C. J. Christensen.
Mrs. A. L. McClure, the pres
ident, introduced the members
of the nominating committee,
Mrs E. F. Cronin, chairman, and
Mrs. E. T. DeVecchio, Mrs. D.
C. Goodman, Mrs. Etta Pryor
and Mrs O. W. Larson

santhemums and centered with
the golden wedding cake. A
memory candle belonging to
their daughter, Mrs. Delmer J.
Dooley, Lakeview, Ore., also
stood on the table.
During the evening neighbors
and friends called, and the
Doty's three children and their
grandchildren were here for the
celebration. They are a son,
Stanley P. Doty, Mrs. Doty and
Patty, Linda and Timmy, Car
son City, Nev., a daughter, Mrs.
John W. Bunten, Carson City,
Mr. Bunten and Janice; and the
second daughter, Mrs. Dooley,
and Mr. Dooley.

ill, were honored at an open house November 14 which observed
their golden wedding anniversary. The Wilsons were married in
Medford and have lived in the
since 1930. Mr. Wilson is a member of the Jacksonville city
council.

On Fiftieth Anniversary
Jacksonville About 75 persons called at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Ray Wison, 406' South Oregon street, Jacksonville, during an
open house, Sunday, November 14, which observed the 50th wed
ding anniversary of the Wilsons. The actual date of their anniver
sary is November 16 and on that

ing the event were the couple's
daughters, Mrs. Hubert DeHaas,
who was here from Valdez,
Alaska, and Mrs. Joe McKnight,
Medford.
Assisting at the event were
Mrs. Floyd Jenkins, Medford, a
niece of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson,
and Mrs. Raymond McKnight, a
granddaughter. .
The couple, married in Med
ford, have lived in various parts
of the Rogue valley and moved
to Jacksonville in 1930. Prior to
that for seven years he was fore
man at the 401 orchards. Mr.
Wilson was elected in November
to the Jacksonville city council.
For 14 years after moving to
Jacksonville they' operated the
Nugget confectionery, and he
served as fire chief for 14 years.
For some time he also was city
recorder.
Decorations for the open house
were golden chrysanthemums
and gold colored candles, and in
cluded a gift basket of large
yellow chrysanthemums.
The couple ; received many
other gifts.
For the occasion Mrs. Wilson
wore a wine colored crepe dress
and her corsage was a brown

Chairman Talks
On Colonialism
For AAUW Here
Mrs. Justin Smith, chairman
of one of the international rela
tions study groups sponsored by
Meaford branch, American As
sociation of University Women,
led a panel discussion on "Prob
lems of Colonialism" to high
light the program at the last
monthly meeting of AAUW, held
Wednesday evening at the home
of Mrs. Robert Temple.
Six' empires . still exist in
Africa, Europe and Asia, Mrs.
Smith pointed out, with Britain,
France and Belgium having con
siderable holdings, and Portu
gal, Spain and the Netherlands
with small colonies. Great Brit
ain is in the process of helping
many of her colonies to become
mdependent, and then urging
them to join the British Com
monwealth of Nations as equals.
Premature indepedence for these
colonies does not serve the in
terests of the United States, the
Allies or the people themselves,
but rather the people themselves
must decide the relative merits
and demerits of independence,
she said.
Africa is especially coming to
the front with its discovery; of
uranium supplies, and its strate
gic location in regard to interna
tional defense problems, Mrs.
Smith said.
Other members taking part in
the panel discussion were Mrs.
B. M. Devers, who discussed
Netherlands East Indies, Mrs.
Berwick Wood, who- talked on
Cyprus, and Mrs. W. A. Scoville,
who spoke on the Virgin Islands.
Mrs. Herbert Seitz, president
of the local A.A.U.W. unit, pre
sided at the business meeting.
Because of the tremendous suc
cess of the children's play "The
Giant of Knockmany" recently
sponsored by the Medford
branch, it is hoped that two per
formances may be scheduled of
future plays in order that every
one wishing to attend may do so.
Another project for children
sponsored by AAUW is a daily
radio ;; program over Station
KYJC at 4 p.m., which consists
of stories, poems and records
aimed primarily for children of
pre-school age and up to the
third grade level. It is believed
to be the first radio program of
its kind to be presented locally
in the Rogue valley. ,
The local AAUW branch also
recently presented its annual art
show at the Medford hotel dur
ing National Art Week. .
Hostesses for the meeting in
addition to Mrs. Temple were
Mrs. J. F. Clark, Mrs. Stuart Mc
Queen, Mrs. John' Carnegie and
Mrs. Lester Stinson.
Next meeting will be the an
nual membership tea, which will
be Saturday, December 4, from
3 to 5 p.m. at the home of Mrs.
Ralph Thompsen, 18 North Mo

AAUW members and prospective
members are invited, as well as
all women registered in study
groups sponsored by AAUW.

heard a report of the 71st an
nual convention of the WCTU
held in October at Portland,
during a meeting of the union
here Thursday at the Girls . Com
munity, club. Mrs. Guy Cox gave
the report
Mrs. Sadie Currier, Roseburg,
was in charge of the convention
worship service as spiritual life
director for the state group. The
Hon. Rudie Wilhelm, speaker of
the house of representatives of
the state legislature, represented
Gov. Paul L. Patterson, at the
meeting. Ormond R. Bean, a
Portland city commissioner: J.
W. Edwards, city school superin
tendent, Dr. Mark Talney, Ore
gon Council of Churches, and
Mrs. G. Henry Green, Oregon
Council of Church Women, all
were at the meeting,, as were
many leaders in church and tem
perance groups.
Mrs. Fred Tooze, president of
the Oregon WCTU spoke and
conducted meetings. She was re
elected president during the ses
sions. Mrs. William I. Hargis is
the new vice-president, Mrs.
Betty Weatherly, corresponding
secretary, Miss Jennie M. Smith
and treasurer, Mrs. C. C. Farr,
recording secretary.
The meeting here Thursday
was presided over by Mrs. Cox,
who is president of this union.
Mrs. G. O. Sanden gave, the de
votionals, which were themed on
Thanksgiving.' Mrs. Ernest San
tos and Mrs. Sanden furnished
a duet with Mrs. W. A. Hoskins
playing the accompaniment.
... The members contributed gifts
and money during the meeting
for the children's Farm home at
Corvailis founded by the WCTU.
They made the annual donations
this year in November rather
than in December as in the past.
This is to facilitate work for the
housemothers at the home.
