The spunky, smallish ex-sql-
dier had been serving at the
front for about six months when
an enemy machinegun blast rip
ped a gaping wound in his
thigh. While recuperating for an
other half year, he kept thinking
about acquiring an education in
America. ,
While a Vietnam normally has
to serve three years before he
can become eligible for a schol
arship in the United States, Nha
explained that "they took the
wound into consideration and
let me go."
He didn't know a word of
English when he came to this
country in February, 1952. Since
then, he's earned a bachelor of
science degree from Bates col
lege, where he made the debat-
