Around Hollywood

into a scenery

rymores." Lionel al
ways insisted
that any feuds
were "feeble-

sense," but still the making of
their film; "Rasputin and the
Empress," furnished colorful
Barrymore stories.
The elder Barrymore had re
tired from the stage in the early
'20s and began a film career,
followed eventually by brother
Jack. When in 1932 MGM lured
Ethel to Hollywood from the
stage for a three-Barrymore pic
ture, Lionel growled, "What
poor unluckv dividual is to
direct this opus?
Everyone on ihe set expected
fireworks, and the spirited Bar-
rymores lived up to the chal
lenge. One day Jack was trying
to scene-steal from Lionel. Fi
nally Lionel stomped from the
set and telephoned back to the
director to instruct John to stop
hugging the camera. .
The fight scene of "Rasputin"
consisted of continual - close-ups
of Lionel and Jack, and the
legend grew that the scene took
so long because each profile was
fighting for the limelight.
John and Lionel had such
reputations for lens larceny that
an actor said to Lionel, "You'd
steal a scene from your grand
mother." Then, remembering she
was the actress Mrs. John Drew,
he added, "No, by God, I guess
you wouldn't."
Lionel once admitted to movie
scene-stealing. When the broth
ers were co-starring in "Night
Flight," director Clarence
Brown bet John $10 Lionel
could not steal a scene in which
John was to bawl out the speech
less Lionel. John delivered his
lines with superb skill. As Lionel
turned to shuffle silently away,
he reached around and rubbed
his behind. John won $10.
Before MGM was convinced
Lionel could act in talkies, he
turned director. While making
"Madame X," he hung a micro
phone on a fishpole over Ruth
Chatterton's head and claimed
he invented the mike boom (an
honor J boasted by others). His
second directorial milestone was
making the first screen test of a
bit player named Clark Gable
who had acted in a Barrymore
play.
Orchids for Gable
"I had him wear nothing but
some orchids and a blossom be
hind his ear," Lionel recently re
called in his autobiography. Ga
ble was hired.
To Barrymore the two most
awesome actresses he met at
MGM were Greta Garbo and
Margaret O'Brien. Of Miss
O'Brien, natural scene-steal-er
he once growled, "If she
had been born in Salem she
would have been burned as a
witch," but he meant it as a com
pliment. Later he took up eat
ing lollipops she brought him,
and he bestowed upon her his
grandmother's pin, a sentimental
heirloom.,;

Service Work Here
An increase in service work
by member chapters of the Dis
abled American Veterans was
planned during a session last
week end at Grants Pass, at
tended by DAV department
members from Medford, Grants
Pass, Klamath Falls, Roseburg,
Oakland and Coquille.
An endorsement also was
made for the Jackson county
salvage rehabilitatibn DAV proj
ect for the assistance to nonresi
dent indigent veterans. Endorse
ment also was made for what
ever action is taken by the coun
ty Veterans 1 Allied council on
congressional action for installa
tion of surgical and medical
facilities at the VA domiciliary
center at Camp White.

commander of the county, Les
ter L. Moser, Pat Graham, adju-
ant, Lester Mathes, an executive
committeeman, and several
others active in DAV and auxili
ary and VAVS work.

to $18 a day during the fall har
vest in Maine's famed potato
growing Aroostock County.
A committee of growers rec
ommended that the pay for pick
ers this year be 18 cents a barrel
for those who dp not receive
board from growers. Pickers who
got board were paid 15 cents a
barrel. ,
An adept worker can harvest
100 barrels a day.
