Youth Admits Robbery Slaying at Timber

Washington county Sheriff R.
H. Busch said today that Jerry
Eugene Dodele had signed a
statement admitting he killed
Ribbens with a .22 caliber rifle
when Ribbers walked in on him
while he was burglarizing the
Southern Pacific railroad em
ployee's house.
Body Found Saturday
Ribbers' body wasn't found
until Saturday afternoon when
his daughter-in-law, Mrs. La
verne Ribbers, went to his house
to see why he hadn't reported

Busch said formal charges
would be placed against the Do
dele boy later today. The boy
is being held in Washington
county jail.
The boy, who lived with his
stepfather and mother, Mr. and
Mrs. Theodore Neutzling, told
officers he had robbed a house
across the road from Ribbers'
home earlier.
Searching for Money
Dodele said he was searching
for money in Ribbers' house
when the owner walked In.
"I got scared and ran to the
bfcroom," he said. "T.itn I
stepped out with the gun at my
side. I pulled the trigger and shot
him."
The boy said he then took the
gun, which he had borrowed,
back to the owner, and went
home to bed.
He was arrested . by Mult
nomah county sheriffs deputies
yesterday at the home of a friend
in Portland.
Pickup Arranged for
Toy Repair Project
Persons who have toys for the
firemen's annual toy repair
project but are unable to deliver
them to the main station, Front
and Third st.,- may telephone
2-2790 and pickup will be ar
ranged, firemen said today.- '
They stated that nearly . all
kinds of broken and discarded
toys are .needed for repair. New
1 toys. will be. welcomed, also.

way with every indication that

would seek to have a hearing on
the case postponed.
Lafferty said his co-counsel,
Richard L. Merrick, of Washing
ton, D.C., had been ill and need
ed time in which to recover be
fore the hearing, which was
scheduled for Tuesday before
U.S. District Judge Alexander
Holtzoff in Washington.
The suit attacks the recent
Cordon-Ellsworth O&C land set
tlemnt act transferring the tim-
berland. The justice department
has a motion before the court
to- dismiss as unconstitutional
the county's suit. -

condition of the sale to Smith
was that he tear down the house
for salvage lumber within seven

at the Jamison Coal & Coke Co.
No. 9 mine kept a lonely vigil
today waiting for a raging un
derground fire to be choked off
so rescue squads can bring out
the bodies of the victims.
All five entrances to the large
mine, which recently had under
gone a $4,000,000 remodeling to
make it safe, were sealed off
Sunday after state . and federal
mine ' officials and the United
Mine Workers union decided it
was not safe to send additional
rescue squads into the pit.
Worst in 10 Years
.The 15 men, all maintenance
workers, were trapped in the
mine when an explosion, believ
ed to have been caused .by an
accumulation of methane gas,
belched black smoke ,and flames
into the sky through the main
portal and a fan house Saturday
afternoon.
Howard Jenkins, a 38-year-old
father of four children, was the
first known victim. He was kill
ed while standing in the fan
house. The 16 deaths made' it
the worst mining disaster in
West Virginia in 10 years.
May Take Month
Officials said it may take
days or even' as long as a month
for the fire to be extinguished
by shutting off the air, depend
ing on how big the fire is and
howi much air already is in the
mine.
They will . keep a constant
check oh the atmosphere in the
mine by taking air samples at
various bore holes to see when it
will be safe to crack the con
crete seals. - '
UMW President John L.
Lewis, who flew here from
Washington, said, he "fully un
derstood" the necessity for seal
ing off the mine. Lewis prom
ised to cut re dtape in provid
ing relief to the miners' de
pendents. The 12 married victims left a
totar of 17 children under 16
years of age.
The .death toll was kept down
by . thfe fact that mining opera
tions normally are curtailed for
the-week end. About 200 men
are employed on a regular shift.
Deportation of
Haymes To Wait
Review by Court
Washington (U.R) The gov
ernment agreed today not to try
to deport Argentine-born singer
Dick Haymes until the courts
have had a chance to review his
case.
The Justice Department gave
this assurance to" federal Judge
Alexander Holtzoff, Haymes' at
torney, W e 1 b u r n Mayock,
promptly withdrew his applica
tion for a court injunction for
bidding the government from
taking Haymes into custody or
otherwise to try to carry out the
pending deportation order
against him. .
Necessary Papers Filed
Haymes' attorneys already
have filed the necessary papers
for having a court review of
the deportation proceedings
against the husband of actress
Rita Hayworth.
Haymes, 36, has been ordered
deported to his native Argentina
on grounds that he entered this
country illegally when he re
turned to the continental United
States after visiting Miss Hay
worth in Hawaii in May, 1953.
Violated Immigration Law
The Justice Department con
tended that Haymes could not
enter this country legally be
cause he sought exemption from
military service during World
War II on grounds he was a citi
zen of a neutral power.
Under the law, anyone obtain
ing such an exemption becomes
ineligible for citizenship and as
such is excludable and deport
able.

First Korean Vessel
Loads at Coos Bay

Korea, first Korean ship to' visit
this southern Oregon port, is
loading lumber here to be used
in the rehabilitation program for
the Asiatic country, r
. Capt. Hoon Jack Kim. said the
10,068-ton vessel is one of six
ships in the Korean merchant
marine. They are all of the same
size. He said the ship was badly
damaged by American bombs in
1945 when it belonged to the
Japanese merchant marine, but
the hull was salvaged by Korea
after the end of the war.
Price Child's Funeral
Held at Silverton '
Funeral . services were held
today for Stephen Price, 4Vfc,
son-of the Rev and Mrs. John
R.. Price, who died at Silverton,
Saturday. The Rev. Mr. Price
and the child's grandfather, the
Rev. John Conner, are former
pastors of the local Pilgrim
Holiness church.
The Rev. William S. Deal, dis
trict superintendent of the de
nomination, arrived at Silver-
ton Monday by plane from In
diana, to officiate at the funeral.
Interment was at Silverton.
The child had been ill for
about a year, a victim of leuke
mia, according to friends here.
